Cette technique a l'avantage de produire rapidement de l'huile, donc d'augmenter la productivité, cependant elle ne permet pas un taux de récupération élevé des huiles en place; 2) celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur («Steam Drive»), qui consiste à injecter la vapeur sur une longue période à partir d'un puits spécifiquement dédié à cette fonction et de récupérer l'huile dans d'autres puits situés aux environs. Cette technique, à l'inverse de celle à injection cyclique, permet d'atteindre de façon progressive un taux de récupération élevé. Parmi ces technologies, on pourra distinguer celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur par zone annulaire chauffée («Heated Annulus Steam Drive») et celle de drainage gravitaire renforcé par la vapeur («Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage»). La deuxième (SAGD) commence à faire ses preuves aujourd'hui.
