HORIZONTAL GENE TRANSFER [3 records]

Record 1 2026-02-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

Homologous recombination is that which we are taught about in introductory biology class. It is the crossing-over process observed during meiosis, though it occurs in bacteria as well. The process involves pairing up of similar DNA sequences, with then one sequence replacing the other, or indeed for meiotic crossing over, with the generation of now two recombinant strands, one for each chromosome homolog, rather than just one. In either case, key is that it is DNA that is highly similar in terms of DNA sequence that is being either replaced or swapped. This allows for a replacement of alleles following horizontal gene transfer, or allele swapping...

DEF

CONT

... Belford and colleagues describe an elegant mutational strategy to engineer an intein with improved features to serve as a tool for protein purification. Previously, this group created a mini-intein by removing an internal domain encoding an endonuclease activity required for horizontal transfer of the intein gene.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Molecular Biology
OBS

Transfer may occur to pollinators and other insects feeding on the plant, and via the insects, the genes may be transferred to unrelated species of higher plants. Transfer may also occur to gut bacteria or cells of small mammals feeding on the plants. These transfers may reactivate dormant viruses or create new viruses in all the species concerned ...

Domaine(s)

DEF
