If the earth were not rotating, the wind would blow exclusively from high to low pressure. Close to the earth, it would be slowed by friction between the atmosphere and the earth's surface but would maintain the same direction with height. However, since the earth undergoes rotation, there is an apparent force acting on horizontal atmospheric motions when examined from a point of reference on the earth's surface. For example, [as] viewed from space(the absolute frame of reference), the [wind] flow [continues] in a straight line. The jet stream is a fragmented global wind flow that encircles the mid-latitudes in a wavelike pattern. Embedded within this global wind belt are jet streaks. A jet streak is a segment of the jet stream that has relatively high velocity winds. ... Jet streaks are caused by a large low-level temperature gradient, thus they are more intense in the cool season when the differential in temperature between the polar regions and tropical regions is largest. Jet streaks are analyzed near the 300-mb level. 4, record 14, English, - jet%20streak

Recent trends in the design of icebreakers are to increase flare angles, to reduce water-line angles, and to reduce stem and buttock angles. 3, record 33, English, - water%2Dline%20angle

Embedded GPS INS. The EGI is in an all-attitude navigation system providing outputs of linear and angular acceleration, velocity, position, attitude (roll, pitch, and platform azimuth), magnetic and true heading, altitude, time tags, and time. When installed in the host platforms in the appropriate configuration, the system provides the navigation functions of the equipment it replaces. It uses vehicle electrical power (28 Vdc), turn-on and mode commands, initialization data, and altitude data, as well as Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite inputs for GPS or GPS/Inertial Navigation System (INS) operation, and is able to track five space vehicles simultaneously. 1, record 45, English, - all%2Dattitude%20navigation%20system

1, record 45, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20navigation%20toutes%20attitudes

Depending on the spatial arrangement of the detectors, the relative calibration error may be constant in one spatial direction. For example, a linear array of detectors may cause relative errors across the image, but since the rest of the image is formed by the motion of the sensor platform, the relative error is constant down the columns of the image. This may cause a vertical striping effect. Or, for a line scanning detector array, the striping may be horizontal as was found in early Landsat MSS sensors. Thus, in implementing the calibration error model, the type and arrangement of detectors must be considered. 2, record 74, English, - striping%20effect

3, record 74, French, - effet%20pyjama

The mirror nephoscope consists essentially of a horizontal disk of black glass engraved with concentric circles. A vertical pointer adjustable to various known heights is mounted on the rim of the instrument. The pointer is so placed by the observer that the image of the cloud under observation is in line with the pointer and the centre of the disk. The image is kept in line with the pointer as it moves, and the direction of motion is read off from a scale on the rim of the circle. Another type of mirror nephoscope has a mirror on which the only marking is a centre point. 5, record 80, English, - mirror%20nephoscope

Line quadrupling is similar to line doubling except that the number of horizontal scan lines are increased by a factor of four instead of two. Increasing the horizontal scan rate by a factor of four(to 63 kHz), allows most CRT's [cathode ray tubes] to obtain a range of optimum efficiency, maximizing light output with projector light output up to 60% brighter than NTSC, PAL, or SECAM displays. In addition to increased picture brightness, the image becomes smoother and has a "film-like" quality. 2, record 81, English, - line%20quadrupling

Record number: 96, Textual support number: 1 OBS
It is based on the principle that if two electrodes are inserted in the ground, and if an external voltage is applied across them, there will be a flow of current through the earth from one electrode to the other. If the medium through which the current flows is homogeneous in its electrical properties, the flow lines will be regular and, in a horizontal plane, symmetrical about the line joining the electrodes. Any inhomogeneities in these properties will cause distortions in the lines of current flow. Such distortions indicate the existence of buried material with higher conductivity than its surroundings, so that it attracts the flow lines toward itself, or with lower conductivity so that it tends to force the lines into the surrounding medium. 1, record 96, English, - equipotential%20line%20method
