Schuler oscillations. Characteristic of all inertial navigation systems; it is caused by the fact that computed velocity is used to keep the platform level as the vehicle moves across the earth’s surface, and any error will cause the accelerometer to sense a component of gravity that affects the computed velocity. In other words, a platform results in accelerometers interpreting gravity times tilt as an acceleration. At sea level the period of oscillation is 84.4 min. 1, record 6, English, - Schuler%20oscillation

The HSI, or Horizontal Navigation Indicator or Pictorial Navigation Indicator, is perhaps one of the most useful although misunderstood instruments around... it combines your directional gyro and Nav indicator into one instrument that reduces pilot workload by providing heading, course reference, course deviation and glide slope information all in one visual aid... You may also consider a slaved HSI. Slaving automatically compensates for gyro heading errors and keeps your HSI in agreement with your compass. It uses a magnetic flux sensor mounted in the wing or tail of your aircraft to sense changes in magnetic heading and sends corrective signals to your HSI. 2, record 10, English, - directional%20heading

South Pointing Carriage is the earliest known example of a land vehicle navigation system.... historical research has only recently established that [it] had nothing to do with magnetism, [but] was based on the principle(now called "the differential odometer") that for a given change in vehicle heading, a vehicle's outer wheels travel a mathematically predictable distance farther than the inner wheels. When changing heading, a gear train driven by an... outer wheel automatically engaged and rotated a horizontal turntable to exactly offset the change in heading... a figure with an outstretched arm mounted on the turntable always pointed in the original direction.... 1, record 13, English, - South%20Pointing%20Carriage
