Typical bandwidths for an imaging radar are in the range 10 to 200 MHz. At the Earth's surface, the energy in the radar pulse is scattered in all directions, with some reflected back toward the antenna. This back scatter returns to the radar as a weaker radar echo and is received by the antenna in a specific polarization(horizontal or vertical, not necessarily the same as the transmitted pulse), for later processing and display as an image.

The range direction of a side-looking radar image as projected onto the nominally horizontal reference plane, similar to the spatial display of conventional maps.

For spacecraft data, an Earth geoid model is used, whereas for airborne radar data, a planar approximation is sufficient. Ground range projection requires a geometric transformation from slant range to ground range, leading to relief or elevation displacement, foreshortening, and layover unless terrain elevation information is used.

Two new tracking functions, BeaconTrac and OBS-Trac, expand tracking capabilities of the new Bendix RDR-1400 digital colour weather radar, according to the company.(...) BeaconTrac generates an inbound course to a discrete beacon. This course line is generated from the beacon display and can be rotated 360 degrees around the beacon with the HSI(Horizontal Situation Indicator) course selector. BeaconTrac will operate up to 80 nmi(about 150 km). Using the HSI course selector to position the BeaconTrac line, the pilot can readily determine an intercept or approach path. Once on BeaconTrac and heading inbound, the RDR-1400 displays left/right deviation to the beacon.
