HORIZONTAL RESTRAINT [5 records]

Record 1 2003-03-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Outfitting of Ships
  • Containers
CONT

One of the four upright components making up the guidance system enabling containers to be carried in a vertical column in the ship, each container supporting the one above it; providing horizontal restraint, the cell guides hold the containers in position.

OBS

On deck, this system permits loading of up to four tiers of containers without lashings.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Structural Framework
  • Rough Carpentry
  • Metal Framework Elements
CONT

Bracing consists of structural elements that are installed to provide restraint or support, or both, to other members so that the complete assembly forms a stable structure. Bracing may be in lateral, longitudinal, and transverse planes and may consist of sway, cross, vertical, diagonal, horizontal, and like elements to resist wind, earthquake, erection, and other forces.

  • Éléments de charpentes métalliques
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Civil Engineering
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
CONT

The term reinforcing is used basically to mean tension or membrane reinforcing, that is, the ability to distribute a concentrated load over a larger area of the subgrade, thus avoiding local overloading of the bearing capacity. A closer analysis of the reinforcing function of a geotextile laid between the base course and the subgrade, reveals that in addition to membrane reinforcing there is a second phenomenon which improves the load bearing capacity of the structure by providing horizontal reinforcing or lateral restraint. Because of this the geotextile works against horizontal deformation where it is in contact with the base and subgrade.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génie civil
  • Mécanique des sols
CONT
