When the beam has returned to the left side, its vertical position is lowered so that the beam will scan the next line down and not repeat the same line. This is accomplished by the vertical scanning motion of the beam, which is provided in addition to horizontal scanning. As a result of the vertical scanning, all the horizontal lines slope downward slightly from top to bottom. When the beam is at the bottom, vertical retrace returns the beam to the top to start the scanning sequence again.

Depending on the spatial arrangement of the detectors, the relative calibration error may be constant in one spatial direction. For example, a linear array of detectors may cause relative errors across the image, but since the rest of the image is formed by the motion of the sensor platform, the relative error is constant down the columns of the image. This may cause a vertical striping effect. Or, for a line scanning detector array, the striping may be horizontal as was found in early Landsat MSS sensors. Thus, in implementing the calibration error model, the type and arrangement of detectors must be considered.

When the requirements of television were first established, it was necessary to decide on a standard repetition rate for showing complete pictures, that is the number of complete frames per second. It was finally decided that thirty complete pictures would be displayed on the screen each second. These complete pictures are referred to as frames. A frame frequency of only thirty pictures per second would result in a flicker discernible to the eye, so each picture is divided into two parts called fields. Two fields must be produced in order to make one complete picture or frame.
