Most winds travel horizontally, as does most wind shear, but under certain conditions, including thunderstorms and strong frontal systems, wind shear will travel in a vertical direction. Microburst wind shear ... can cause an aircraft to lose lift and crash, especially during takeoff or landing, when the slower speeds and closeness to the ground make altitude correction more difficult. Since 1996 all U.S. airliners have been required to be equipped with instruments that provide the pilot with advance warning of wind shear. 5, record 6, English, - wind%20shear

wind shear.... Shear usually refers to vertical wind shear(i. e., the change in wind with height) but the term also is used in Doppler radar meteorology to describe changes in radial velocity over short horizontal distances. Free products and dissolved petroleum components from the surface of the contaminated aquifer are captured and treated via multi-phase extraction & treatment. Bioslurping induces a horizontal vacuum gradient on the targeted monitor/recovery wells through a slurp tube which is inserted into each well. Product and groundwater are entrained in droplet form in a high velocity air stream and brought to the surface for treatment. Following air/liquid separation the liquid phase is treated by a combination of oil/water separation, air stripping, and liquid phase carbon treatment before being discharged. The off-gas is treated(if necessary) by vapour phase carbon treatment. The advantages of multi-phase extraction & treatment include : a high product to groundwater extraction ratio; aeration of the vadose zone which enhances natural biodegradation of the hydrocarbon contaminants; all treatment components may be housed in a turn-key mobile remedial unit; a simple product recovery technology which can be transferred to conventional remedial applications such as pump and treat, sparging and vapour extraction system(VES) applications. In 1962 a fundamentally new mode of gas motion in the solar atmosphere was discovered(...). This mode was most visible as a horizontal motion organized in large cells with the gas velocity directed outward from the center of each cell at about 0. 5 km/sec.(...) It was then hypothesized that these large cells were convective in nature, in the sense of hot gas rising at the center of a cell and cool gas falling at the periphery. Driving rain is rain that is carried by the wind and driven onto the building envelope (façades and roofs). Streaks or wisps of precipitation, such as water or ice particles, that fall from clouds but evaporate before reaching the ground. 6, record 15, English, - virga
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Virga is frequently seen trailing from altocumulus and altostratus clouds, but also is discernible below the bases of high-level cumuliform clouds from which precipitation is falling into a dry subcloud layer. It typically exhibits a hooked form in which the streaks descend nearly vertically just under the precipitation source but appear to be almost horizontal at their lower extremities. Such curvature of virga can be produced simply by effects of strong vertical wind shear, but ordinarily it results from the fact that droplet or crystal evaporation decreases the particle terminal fall velocity near the ends of the streaks. Under some conditions, virga are associated with dry microbursts, which are formed as a product of the evaporation. 7, record 15, English, - virga

Fall streaks are the wisps that can sometimes be seen falling below high, thin cirrus clouds. They are ice crystals that fall out of the cloud but evaporate as they fall into drier air below. Horizontal Rotary Cup Oil Burners. This type of burner atomizes the oil by spinning it in a thin film from a horizontal rotating cup and injecting high velocity primary air into the oil film through an annular nozzle which surrounds the rim of the atomizing cup. This atomizing cup and frequently the primary air fan are mounted on a horizontal main shaft which is motor driven and rotates at constant speed, 58 to 100 r/s depending on the size and make of burner. The oil is fed to the atomizing cup at controlled rates from an oil pump which is usually driven from the main shaft through a worm and gear. 2, record 22, English, - horizontal%20rotating%20cup

Propeller fan units are generally used in free-delivery applications.... Down-blow units are employed in high-ceiling spaces and where floor and wall space limitations dictate an out-of-the-way location for the heating equipment. Down-blow units may be supplied with an adjustable diffuser to vary the air discharge pattern from a high velocity vertical jet(to achieve the maximum distance of downward throw) to a horizontal discharge of lower velocity(to prevent excessive air motion in the zone of occupancy). Revolving diffusers are also available. 1, record 23, English, - down%2Dblow%20unit%20heater
