If the earth were not rotating, the wind would blow exclusively from high to low pressure. Close to the earth, it would be slowed by friction between the atmosphere and the earth's surface but would maintain the same direction with height. However, since the earth undergoes rotation, there is an apparent force acting on horizontal atmospheric motions when examined from a point of reference on the earth's surface. For example, [as] viewed from space(the absolute frame of reference), the [wind] flow [continues] in a straight line. However, as viewed from the earth, the flow has undergone an apparent deflection to the right. 3, record 4, English, - horizontal%20atmospheric%20motion

The jet stream is a fragmented global wind flow that encircles the mid-latitudes in a wavelike pattern. Embedded within this global wind belt are jet streaks. A jet streak is a segment of the jet stream that has relatively high velocity winds. ... Jet streaks are caused by a large low-level temperature gradient, thus they are more intense in the cool season when the differential in temperature between the polar regions and tropical regions is largest. Jet streaks are analyzed near the 300-mb level. 4, record 13, English, - jet%20streak

Some authors consider "jet stream core" and "core of the jet stream" synonyms with "jet streak. "In fact, a "jet stream core" is "a line, within the jet stream, along which the wind speeds are maximum both in the vertical and horizontal. "The "jet streak" is a "segment within the jet stream core where the wind reaches its greatest speed. "There could be more than one "jet streak" within a "jet stream core. Actuator disk theory. The simplest model of a horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) is one in which the turbine rotor is replaced by an actuator disk which removes energy from the wind. As the wind strikes the actuator disk on the upwind side, the pressure rises there, and the wind is deflected away from the disk, causing a large wake downstream of the disk. Actuator disk theory relates the pressure drop across the disk to the change in wake size and the energy which can be extracted from the wind. 2, record 27, English, - actuator%20disk%20theory

It is important to note that convective cells can cause air currents both upward and downward. Upward convective currents carry pollutants many kilometers high into the atmosphere. At these high altitudes advective currents and prevailing winds can transport these pollutants vast distances very quickly. As air spreads from the rising column, it is cooled and falls back down to the earth. This results in a circular rotation of the air. 3, record 43, English, - advective%20current

Drainage of the lake-beds, related to a seasonal phenomenon of dust storms between February and May, has also affected air quality. advection : The horizontal movement of air around the world is known as advection. Advection is the primary mechanism responsible for long range transport of pollutants. Windmills may rotate by being "pushed" by the wind(drag) or by using aerodynamic forces such as "lift"... [and] may rotate around a vertical or a horizontal axis.... The Darreus windmill is a vertical axis aerodynamic type. It was invented in France in the 1930s and is currently being developed for manufacture in Canada. It has one or more curved flexible blades of airfoil design, shaped to a curve that is consistent with the centrifugal and aerodynamic forces it experiences in rotation. It is not self-starting, but a small Savonius rotor can be attached to its central axis to provide this feature. 1, record 44, English, - Darreus%20windmill

One expedient method for determining the winds aloft entails the launching and tracking of a pilot balloon, also known as a pibal. The name for these balloons that do not carry instruments apparently came from their use during the 19th century when they were launched prior to manned balloon ascents to help guide or "pilot" the manned balloons. The brightly colored helium filled balloon rises at a known ascent rate. However, the balloon is carried horizontally with the wind. Since the assumption is made that the balloon serves as a tracer of the wind, the horizontal motion of the balloon over measured time intervals can be used to determine the wind speed. An observer visually tracks the motion of the balloon with an instrument called a theodolite and records the elevation and azimuth angles at timed intervals. The sequence of observed elevation and azimuth information are plotted on a plotting board to obtain the balloon motion. The wind speed and direction at each selected level are determined. Wind observations may be limited by low cloud ceilings that obscure the balloon. 2, record 61, English, - pilot%20balloon

The main principles of wind-driven ocean circulation are as follows. 1. Wind stress causes transport of water in a thin Ekman surface layer. 2. If there is a curl to the wind stress, the Ekman layer transport will converge or diverge, causing downwelling or upwelling. 3. The downwelling or upwelling motions cause fluid columns to squash or stretch vertically, and this causes slow southward or northward flow due to conservation of potential vorticity. 4. The southward or northward flow is determined by the Sverdrup relationship, which links the N-S transport of water with the curl of the wind stress. In order to conserve mass, the water returns to its original position via a relatively thin boundary layer adjacent to the western edge of the basin. 3, record 71, English, - wind%2Ddriven%20oceanic%20circulation

The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 72, English, - supercell%20tornado

2, record 72, French, - tornade%20supercellulaire

Another increasingly popular type of anemometer is the propeller anemometer. This anemometer is simply a very small two- or three-blade propeller, calibrated so that the revolutions per minute (rpm) corresponds to specific wind speeds. This anemometer is known as a "lift" device because it relies upon the rational lift caused by the wind on the propellers to measure the wind speed. By using two propellers held fixed at a perpendicular angle to each other, one can simultaneously measure the wind speed and direction using vector analysis. By including a third propeller positioned vertically relative to the other two, vertical wind movements also can be measured. It should be noted that the effect of variations in air density (due to temperature and/or pressure conditions) are accounted for differently in lift devices (for example, propeller anemometers) and drag devices (for example, cup anemometers). 4, record 80, English, - propeller%20anemometer
Record number: 80, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The... propellor anemometer consists of a circular array of blades, usually not less than three, mounted at one end of a horizontal shaft; the blades are free to rotate in response to wind forces acting on them. A wind vane is attached to the opposite end of the shaft. The horizontal shaft is connected to a vertical shaft which, being mounted in bearings, turns as the varying wind direction acts on the vane. 2, record 80, English, - propeller%20anemometer

Virga is frequently seen trailing from altocumulus and altostratus clouds, but also is discernible below the bases of high-level cumuliform clouds from which precipitation is falling into a dry subcloud layer. It typically exhibits a hooked form in which the streaks descend nearly vertically just under the precipitation source but appear to be almost horizontal at their lower extremities. Such curvature of virga can be produced simply by effects of strong vertical wind shear, but ordinarily it results from the fact that droplet or crystal evaporation decreases the particle terminal fall velocity near the ends of the streaks. Under some conditions, virga are associated with dry microbursts, which are formed as a product of the evaporation. 7, record 81, English, - virga

While weather elements, such as temperature and pressure, are observed only at particular locations, we can assume that these elements are continuously distributed in the horizontal direction. Such a distribution is called a meteorological field; in other words, for any latitude and longitude, some value of that variable exists without any voids or discontinuities. Isobaric Analysis. Many of the surface analysis charts may contain thin solid lines to depict the features of the horizontal pressure field at mean sea level. 1, record 95, French, - champ%20horizontal%20de%20pression

Waves are formed due to the friction of the wind over the water surface. The three main components for wave generation are the wind speed, it’s duration and fetch. ... How to recognise a swell/wave generating area. On a weather chart there are high and low pressure systems. They are separated by isobars (lines joining places of equal pressure). Buys Ballot’s law states: "If you stand with your back to the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure will be on your left." From this you can deduce the wind flows anticlockwise around a low pressure system and almost parallel to the isobars. The wind near the surface actually flows at an angle of about 15 degrees to the isobars pointing in to the low. The reason for this is that friction with the surface slows the air down and it is this friction which causes waves to form. Assuming you have identified an area of closely packed isobars which are almost straight for 200 miles and the low system is not changing to quickly, you have found a good swell generating area. 3, record 99, English, - wave%20generation%20area
