HOST MEDIUM [7 records]

Subject field(s)
  • Genetics
CONT

The most striking form of phage infection is that in which all of the infected bacteria are destroyed in the process of the formation of new phage particles. This results in the clearing of turbid liquid culture as the infected cells lyse. When lysis occurs in cells fixed as a lawn of bacteria growing on a solid medium, it produces holes, or areas of clearing, called plaques. These represent colonies of bacteriophage. The size and other properties of the plaque vary with individual viruses and host cells.

CONT

Quartz-Carbonate Vein Gold Deposits in Metamorphic Terranes. ... This type of gold deposit consists dominantly of quartz-carbonate veins in metamorphosed volcanic, sedimentary and granitoid rocks. Such deposits are commonly referred to as mesothermal vein deposits in the literature, in part after the classification of Lindgren (1933); ...

CONT

Of paramount importance are the abundant quartz-carbonate vein deposits that typify greenstone terrains of all ages; because their inferred conditions of formation are compatible with the low to medium metamorphic grade of their host rocks, these deposits are also commonly referred to as mesothermal vein deposits.

Earthen cover systems may vary from relatively simple thick clay caps to more complex, multilayered caps employing alternating layers of such natural materials as clay, sand gravel, cobble, boulders, rip-rap, and topsoil as well as synthetic membranes.

CONT

The first concept [for low-level wastes disposal in a clay/till host medium] consists of trenches lined with circular concrete caissons. The trenches... are filled with 6 m of wastes capped by a structural roof plus mounded earth cover.

The first concept [for low-level waste disposal in a clay/till host medium of at least 15 m thickness] consists of trenches lined with circular concrete caissons. The trenches are 10 m wide and 107 m in length and are filled with 6 m of wastes capped by a structural roof plus mounded earth cover.

CONT

Class II [of low-level radioactive wastes] .... Wastes from this category are currently stored in engineered asphalt trenches and concrete bunkers at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratory and in concrete trenches at the Bruce Nuclear Power Development.

CONT

Wastes containing significant quantities of radioactivity are stored in engineered facilities, most of which are concrete bunkers, with lined holes set into the ground being used for the water table in free draining sands. Wastes with lower radioactivity content are buried in trenches in the sand at Area c ....

The trenches are 10 m wide and 107 m in length and are filled with 6 m of wastes capped by a structural roof plus mounded earth cover. Intermediate level wastes are placed in 3-m diameter augured boreholes of 8. 5 m depth. A temporary weather enclosure is used during the filling operations.
