Since 1994, Environment Canada has relied upon a text-to-voice generating system called AVIPADS(Automated Voice Information Processing and Dissemination System) to deliver its forecasts, hourly weather reports, and a host of other voice products to its own network of ATADs(Automatic Telephone Answering Devices) and weather radios, in English and French. By using a vocabulary of almost 40, 000 words and phrases recorded by a human to give a natural sounding product with proper inflections and intonations and by concatenating them into voice files, AVIPADS now records over almost all of the basic level of service that Environment Canada provides on its voice recording network in both official languages. 1, record 7, English, - Automated%20Voice%20Information%20Processing%20and%20Dissemination%20System

The intestinal microbes are taxonomically complex and constitute an ecologically dynamic community(microbiota) that has long been believed to possess a strong impact on human physiology. Furthermore, they are heavily involved in the maturation and proliferation of human intestinal cells, helping to maintain their homeostasis and can be causative of various diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease and obesity... Through metagenomic analysis, it is now possible to comprehensively explore the genetic nature of the intestinal microbiome, the mutually interacting system comprising the host cells and the residing microbial community. 1, record 17, English, - human%20intestinal%20microbiome

Holland and Lambert considered that the scatter of points might be the product of an open isotopic system involving variable loss of 87Sr into the host gneisses. If this were the case and if there were no comparable loss of Rb, the upper boundary of the data spread(i. e. the nine-point 1663 Ma isochron) would be expected to give the closest approximation to the age. 4, record 23, English, - nine%2Dpoint%20Rb%2DSr%20isochron

This is a system comprised of two enzymatic activities: one a restriction endonuclease that cuts DNA and the other, a methylase that modifies DNA at the same sequence. The idea being that the bacteria’s own DNA is modified at the proper sites and hence is protected from the action of the restriction enzyme. However if foreign DNA enters the cell, such as by transformation or by a virus, that DNA is "foreign" and not correctly modified, hence it is a substrate for the restriction enzyme and is cut up into small pieces. 5, record 29, English, - restriction%2Dmodification%20system

The XHTML Basic document type includes the minimal set of modules required to be an XHTML host language document type, and in addition it includes images, forms, basic tables, and object support. It is designed for Web clients that do not support the full set of XHTML features; for example, Web clients such as mobile phones, PDAs, pagers, and settop boxes. The document type is rich enough for content authoring. XHTML Basic is designed as a common base that may be extended. For example, an event module that is more generic than the traditional HTML 4 event system could be added or it could be extended by additional modules from XHTML Modularization such as the Scripting Module. The goal of XHTML Basic is to serve as a common language supported by various kinds of user agents. 1, record 31, English, - XHTML%26trade%3B%20Basic

The Common Departmental Financial System(CDFS) is a comprehensive on-line departmental financial management and reporting system designed to simplify and streamline financial administration. CDFS was developed to respond to the changing needs for financial management information in the federal government. It complements recommendations outlined in Public Service 2000 which called for departmental line managers to assume a greater responsibility for financial management of the areas under their control. Offered by Public Works and Government Services Canada(PWGSC), CDFS is an optional service. It replaces the FINCON and FINCAP systems. CDFS is a distributed system. Under the current configuration, the PWGSC Mainframe acts as a host while the presentation layer resides at the client site on a Local Area Network(LAN) or workstation. 2, record 45, English, - Common%20Departmental%20Financial%20System

2, record 45, French, - Syst%C3%A8me%20financier%20minist%C3%A9riel%20commun

The concept of immunologic surveillance was proposed as a paradigm by Burnet3 in 1970 to explain the spontaneous growth of cancer in a normal host. He proposed that the immune system had the capacity of detecting non-self from self as a general principle. When non-self was detected, the immune systems reacted with a variety of effectors, whose responsibility was to destroy the invading organisms. This understanding was found to be essentially correct when applied to invading organisms such as bacteria, pleuropneumonia-like organisms and viruses. The major cell type of the immune system whose responsibility it was to make the self-nonself determination were T cells.

At the NIH, Ildstad and her mentor, David Sachs, tried to induce the same kind of "chimeric" organ tolerance in adult mice. They used a mixture of marrow from the donor and the recipient. To prevent graft vs. host, they filtered mature T cells out. Their hope was that immature immune cells in the mixed bone marrow would grow inside the mouse into a functioning immune system. If all went well, the hybrid immune system would tolerate both donor and recipient cells as "self. " 1, record 56, English, - hybrid%20immune%20system

A computer program used to permit testing of operational programs on a host computer. The operational programs run under simulated conditions as if they were operating within the real time control program of a machine to which all of the devices constituting the ultimate system are attached. The simulator program contains expansions of all control program macros that modify the entry block and other working storage in the same manner as the macros in the actual control program. 1, record 65, English, - environment%20simulator
