A column drier is equipped with one or more unobstructed columns through which grain falls by gravity. The columns are about 30 centimetres apart and are sheathed on either side by perforated screens or wire mesh which retain the grain but permit passage of air. On one side of each column, space is allowed for air entry and on the other side, air is discharged. Hot air passes across the column at the top of the drier, drying grain as it falls. In a similar manner, cool air passes across the bottom of the column to cool the grain. Some energy conservation has been achieved by recirculating part of the "spent" hot air which has passed through the heating section.

Ces colonnes sont espacées d'environ 30 centimètres et entourées par des trémies perforés ou des treillis métalliques qui, tout en retenant le grain, laissent passer l'air. L'air entre par un côté de la colonne et sort par le côté opposé. L'air chaud traverse la partie supérieure de la colonne du séchoir et sèche le grain pendant sa descente. L'air frais, à la partie inférieure, effectue le même parcours pour refroidir le grain. On a pu réaliser, avec ce système, quelques économies d'énergie en faisant recirculer une partie de l'air chaud usé qui a passé dans la section chauffante.

This machine usually consists of two small washing or scouring tanks, drying cylinders, and a straightening gill-box. It is made in several forms, for each type certain constructional advantages or advantages for the material treated being claimed. It is employed either before or after combing to thoroughly clean worsted slivers or "tops, "for not only does the wool become sullied in passing through the several preparing machines, but impurities which cannot be extracted in the scouring bowls have revealed themselves and may here be conveniently got rid of. The process of "blueing" to give a white appearance to the slivers or tops is frequently resorted to, and is usually affected on the backwasher. The latest innovation in this machine is the adoption of hot air drying in place of cylinder drying.

The ultimate in sizing treatments is achieved by tub sizing. Here the sheet is run through a shallow bath containing a solution of starch and other additives, and the excess solution is removed by passing the sheet through a light nip. Initial drying of the sized sheet is usually accomplished by hot air impingement to avoid disturbing the size film. In tub sizing, the objective is not only to improve surface properties, but also to impregnate the sheet sufficiently to improve such properties as ply bond, burst, stiffness and tensile strength. Tub sizing is sometimes carried out on-machine, but better results are obtained with an off-machine operation.

In this method, the air temperature is controlled to suit the drying requirements and speed of the machine, while the paper is carried through the tunnel on rollers, supported on foils, or held up by air-impingement.

On sèche très couramment les couchés simple face au moyen de cylindres classiques chauffés à la vapeur et surmontés par une hotte où l'air convectif circule à grande vitesse. Le séchage en tunnel est une autre méthode qui s'adapte aussi bien aux couchés simple face qu'aux couchés double face. Dans ce cas, le papier est soutenu par des rouleaux, supporté par des racles ou aéroporté. On règle la température dans le tunnel en fonction des besoins du séchage et de la vitesse de la machine.

A variation of flash drying is embodied in the so-called "steam dryer", where fluffed pulp is dried in a medium of slightly superheated low-pressure steam rather than in hot air. Heat is transferred to the pulp and transport steam by indirectly condensing higher-pressure steam. The water evaporated from the pulp is removed from the steam as low-pressure steam suitable for process use in the pulp or paper mill. It is claimed that net heat consumption can be as low as one-fourth of that used in a conventional drying system.

Air Float Dryer.... principle of operation.... The pulp web is carried in a number of passes through a chamber in which heated air is used both for drying and for supporting the web. Capital and operating costs are similar to the steam cylinder system, but most pulp producers favor the air float dryer because it is easier to operate and maintain. In the earlier models of the air dryer, the pulp web is carried on mechanical conveyors and hot air is blown between the passes. The later designs incorporate true air impingement above and below the web; this principle provides much higher evaporation rates and eliminates the mechanical conveyor. Typically, the pulp web enters at the top, makes a number of horizontal passes turning around rollers at each end, and leaves at the bottom of the dryer at the opposite end.

The Büttner Jet Dryer... consists of a stationary drying chamber, a blower arranged behind the drying to throw the particles into a cyclone, inlet and outlet rotary air locks, the furnace, and the connecting ductwork. This dryer has a fluidized bed with the material being fed into the drying chamber(drums) at one end. Hot air is blown into the drum from the bottom and subsequently flows through the bed of material. The furnish is moved forward by rotating raker arms with the material constantly spinning and rotating.
