Record 1 2017-06-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Aircraft
CONT

Pulling on the vent control opens a hole either in the top or the side of the balloon to allow hot air to spill out and to descend.

OBS

Used to open and reclose the side vent or vent valve in flight to allow a controlled release of hot air. White and operated from the basket.

Record 2 2017-01-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climate-Control Equipment (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

When the engine gets hot, coolant and air in the system expand, causing a pressure buildup. The pressure valve in the radiator cap opens... and coolant and air flow out through the cap into the coolant-recovery reservoir.

OBS

expansion tank: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Système de conditionnement de l'air (Véhicules automobiles)
CONT

Record 3 2016-05-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fueling Systems (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

The intake-manifold heat control system should pass hot air through, or against, the intake manifold only when the engine is cold. When the engine is warm, the hot exhaust gases should not contact the intake manifold. The valve that takes care of this job is often called the heat-riser valve.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Alimentation (Véhicules automobiles)
CONT

Pour améliorer la vaporisation du carburant (pendant le réchauffage du moteur) on utilise un dispositif pour réchauffer la tubulure d'admission [...] appelé volet de réchauffeur [...]

DEF

A valve on brass instruments that allows musicians to empty their instruments after a performance.

The starter air shutoff valve incorporates a pneumatic heater tube which taps into the pneumatic duct system upstream of the butterfly valve. This provides a continuous flow of hot air on the valve body and switcher mechanism to prevent freezing or to thaw a frozen valve, when APU/engine operates. The pneumatic heater tube is removable for cleaning and to facilitate unblocking.
