Elles comportent un clapet et un diffuseur : un clapet maintenu par des leviers rendus solidaires par un alliage fusible ou une ampoule de verre remplie de liquide. Dans la plupart des cas, la température de déclenchement est fixée à 68 °C. Quant au diffuseur, c'est sur lui que vient se briser le jet d'eau sortant de la canalisation.

C'est pourquoi on donne souvent à ces dispositifs le nom anglais de sprinklers et même de Grinnell, quoique les brevets de l'inventeur soient depuis longtemps tombés dans le domaine public.

[Extincteur automatique] Moins fréquent, ce terme semble surtout utilisé au Canada et dans les ouvrages traduits quoique relevé aussi dans DUCON; de plus, il n'est pas toujours possible de juger, en contexte, si on l'utilise au sens d'une «installation de sprinkleurs» ou dans le sens de «tête de sprinkleur». Noter également que tous les extincteurs automatiques ne fonctionnent pas nécessairement à l'eau; on utilise parfois de la mousse, du gaz carbonique ou une poudre spéciale. Another process somewhat related to injection blow-molding is dip blow molding used for small containers. The process has the advantage of reducing some of the molded-in stress. A core rod is inserted into a cupel, displacing resin and packing it into the neck finish area. As the core rod moves away, a predetermined amount of resin is permitted to remain on the rod. A hot knife cuts the hot plastic, separating the material on the rod from the melt pool in the cupel. The core rod is then rotated to the blow station for blow molding. Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house.
