CONT

Asphalt Concrete mixes made with asphalt cement are prepared at an asphalt mixing plant. Here, aggregates are blended, heated, dried, and mixed with asphalt cement to produce a hot mix asphalt(HMA).... Asphalt Concrete plants are basically of two types, batch or drum mix. The two types of asphalt plants derive their names from their particular type mixing operation. In the batch-type mixing plant, hot aggregate and asphalt are withdrawn in desired amounts to make up one batch for mixing. After mixing, the thoroughly mixed material is discharged from the pugmill in one batch. In the drum-type mixing plant, the aggregate is dried, heated, and mixed with the asphaltic cement in the drum in a continuous operation.

Subject field(s)

DEF

Plant mixes that must be spread and compacted while at elevated temperature. To dry the aggregate and obtain sufficient fluidity of the asphalt(usually asphalt cement), both must be heated prior to mixing-giving origin to the term "hot mix".

CONT

Historically, asphalt has been a road-paving material ... It can ... be used as a hot or cold mix blended with stone, slag, sand, or gravel aggregates before it is spread on the prepared base.

DEF

An asphaltic product applied as an adhesive to seal the laps of roofing felt to each other.

CONT

Tapco's Tite Seal Cold Process Lap Cement is a high quality, fibered asphalt, solvent blend, of medium brushing consistency that provides a tough, permanent seal for laps of rolled roofing. It provides an even tighter longer lasting bond than hot asphalt without the disagreeable odor or smoke. This cold process product may also be used as an extra heavy bodied roof coating to seal cracks or resaturate old roofing layers. In some instances it may be used to patch roofs because of the extreme bonding quality of the product.
