It is occasionally used for a vertical subdivision of thermal belts in mountainous terrain.

Surfacing for the hot BUR can be aggregate embedded in hot asphalt; mineral-surface cap sheets; modified bitumen cap sheets; or smooth-surface applications or coatings.
