NDA inspection systems are dependent upon the isotopic content of the shipment and the level to which accuracy is required. Potential techniques include any one or a combination of passive and active gamma scanning, and passive and active neutron scanning... In passive gamma scanning, the sample is rotated in front of a collimated detector at several axial increments while gamma spectra are collected. A more complex variation includes a pin-hole gamma camera and a charged coupled detector device to generate real-time images of the entire sample.... Passive gamma scanning is non-invasive and can be done remotely with the sample and positioning mechanism inside a hot cell... 1, record 1, English, - passive%20gamma%20scanning

1, record 1, French, - gammascanning%20passif

This chemical sensing technique relies on nanoparticles consisting of gold and silica called nanoshells, invented 10 years ago at Rice by nanophotonics pioneer Naomi Halas. Nanoshells are about 20 times smaller than a red blood cell, and they can amplify light waves and focus them so tightly that scientists can use them to detect just a few molecules of a target chemical. Building catalysts directly on the surface of the nanoparticles themselves allows researchers to use the nanosensing capabilities of nanoshells to directly follow chemical reactions on the catalyst using light. 8, record 2, English, - gold%20nanoshell

In 1962 a fundamentally new mode of gas motion in the solar atmosphere was discovered(...). This mode was most visible as a horizontal motion organized in large cells with the gas velocity directed outward from the center of each cell at about 0. 5 km/sec.(...) It was then hypothesized that these large cells were convective in nature, in the sense of hot gas rising at the center of a cell and cool gas falling at the periphery. This phenomenon is known as the "supergranulation". 1, record 3, English, - supergranulation

Another innovation is the back-surface reflector(BSR). Even in photovoltaic devices operating at theoretical maximum efficiency, less than 40% of the light to which it is sensitive is absorbed by the cell and converted to electricity. The rest travels through unabsorbed and becomes a system loss. However, the BSR reflects this light back through the cell for a second pass, which greatly increases the conversion efficiency. Also, the BSR reflects radiation to which the cell is not sensitive. This radiation is called out-of-band radiation, and cannot be converted to electricity with this given material bandgap. By reflecting the out-of-band radiation back through the cell, it passes back out the front to the heat source where it is recycled.(Essentially, it helps keep the heat source hot so less fuel is required.) 2, record 7, English, - back%20surface%20reflector

Current is led out of the [electrolytic reduction] cell to the anode bus bar by a number of carbon block anodes suspended in parallel rows on vertical conducting rods of copper or aluminum. Because impurities in the anodes dissolve in the bath as they are consumed, pure carbon(calcined petroleum coke or pitch coke) is used as raw material. The ground coke is mixed hot with enough coal tar or petroleum pitch to bond it into a block when pressed in a mold to form the "green" anode.
