English

Subject field(s)
  • Geothermal Energy
  • Energy (Physics)
  • Geophysics
DEF

Energy obtained, in the form of heat, from the depths of the earth.

CONT

Geothermal energy [means] heat generated by natural processes within the earth. Chief energy resources are hot dry rock, magma(molten rock), hydrothermal(water/steam from geysers and fissures and geopressure(water saturated with methane under tremendous pressure at great depths).

OBS

This heat may sometimes be harnessed, through the medium of hot water and steam, for heating and other purposes.

OBS

Today geothermal energy is basically used to supply heat energy, generate electric energy and for balneological and recreational purposes.

OBS

geothermal energy: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Énergie géothermique
  • Énergie (Physique)
  • Géophysique
DEF

Record 3 2004-02-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geological Research and Exploration
  • Energy Transformation
CONT

Hot dry rock process(petrophysical systems). Hot rock layers at a depth of 4, 000 to 7, 000 meters are used with this new system which has not yet been fully developed. Water is pressed into the hot rock via a borehole and the heated water is then fed back to the surface and used to supply heat or produce electricity.

CONT

In order to be able to gain heat from the deep, crystalline rockbeds, the so-called hot-dry-rock technique was developed.

Domaine(s)

DEF

CONT

... another possible way of creating permeability in hot dry rocks is «impact fracturing». This method... [may be described in its principle. ] A bore, cased except near the lower extremity, is surmounted by a hydraulic accumulator, filled with water and pressurized by means of a pump until the accumulator weight is lifted. The lifting pressure should be perhaps about 90% of the estimated hydro-fracturing pressure. A dynamic blow would then be struck upon the top of the water column by means of some device resembling a pile-driver, so that shock waves would travel to the base of the bore and be reflected up and down at attenuating intensity. Very high instantaneous pressures would be generated which would fracture the rock, and it is expected that the steepness of the pressure rise would be such as to resemble explosive action, so that the «star» formation... would be produced.

Conductive geothermal systems are characterized by a thermal regime due to conduction alone, often in the steady state. The working fluid is either present(e. g. in geopressurized systems) or must be supplied(Hot Dry Rock Systems).
