The preliminary mechanical processing of the dried [hemp] stalks involves some fairly vigorous handling of the raw material, including breaking, scutching and the separation of the line fibres from the tow and other by-products. The stronger, more solid fibre bundles keep their original lengths and parallelism. During breaking and scutching the weaker and shorter fibres(tow), especially those at the foot of the stalks, break away and are removed together with the hurds, dust, soil, etc.... The hurds are removed pneumatically and may be sold for use as natural fertiliser, for the heat insulation of buildings, as fuel or as animal litter... The hemp tow is then passed through a conveyer drier that can use either hot or cold air. 1, record 2, English, - hemp%20tow

An ex-vessel steam explosion may occur if the primary system is breached by hot debris. Debris in the reactor outlet piping may fail the piping and fall onto the pump room floor or debris on the reactor vessel bottom may be blocked from flowing into the outlet piping if it freezes in the effluent piping nozzle muff structure. If this occurs, the debris will heat up on the reactor vessel bottom and eventually fail the bottom shield. The likely mode of failure of the bottom shield is collapse of the shield as a whole. If it collapses, the entire shield, as well as the molten debris, will fall into the pin room below the reactor vessel. The debris will then flow across the floor into the pump room. In either event, a large portion of the reactor fuel inventory will be deposited on the pump room floor. The pump room floor will be covered with water in many scenarios. A steam explosion may result when the debris enters this water. 1, record 5, English, - ex%2Dvessel%20explosion

Today all hot air balloon burners have one thing in common. They use liquid propane as their fuel source. When using liquid propane the burner has to serve a dual purpose. First it must convert the liquid propane to a vapor, so it can be burnt at the orifices to produce the heat that makes the balloon fly. Achieving this function is where each balloon manufacturer differs in burner design. If you compare the shape of the Avian burner coils to other manufacturers, you’ll notice it has a larger circular radius with few 90 degree bends in its preheat coils. The reason we design our burner coil this way is to utilize a very basic principle of fuel flow. "The fewer the restrictions to flow, such as tight bends in tubing, in the complete burner system, the greater the pressure will be when it is released at the burner orifices, giving a higher BTU [British thermal unit] output. 2, record 10, French, - serpentin%20de%20br%C3%BBleur

Natural convection, also called thermosyphoning, does not produce high flow. It cannot remove full power heat, but is adequate to remove decay heat. Natural convection occurs when cool D2O in the boiler tubes falls by gravity into the core. It displaces the hot, less dense D2O surrounding the fuel. The boilers cool the fluid pushed into them from the fuel channels, and it becomes more dense. The liquid that falls into the core expands on heating and becomes less dense. Thermosyphoning continues as long as the boilers continue to remove heat. 1, record 21, English, - natural%20convection

1, record 21, French, - convexion%20naturelle

So what is the difference between a non-condensing and condensing engine? A "condensing" steam engine does not exhaust its piped steam. Instead the spent steam is piped into a devise whcih, like a car radiator, cools the steam turning it back in to liquid water(cooling and condensing the steam). That still very hot wtaer is pumped back into the boilers where it is reheated and reused. Since the returning water is still very hot it requires less heat to bring it back up to boiling temperature. There are two sub-types : pure suspension and cyclonic. Pure suspension units are true "burners" in that a stable open flame(similar to a gas or oil burner flame) is created by air jets that are usually mounted in the wall of the combustor or boiler. Cyclonic suspension units have a refractory cylindrical combustion chamber into which the fuel particles and air are introduced tangentially. The long cyclonic gas circulation keeps the fuel circulating in the chamber, resulting in complete combustion of the fuel, but all ash normally exits with the hot exhaust gases. Fuel is fed to both types of these burners by pneumatic feeders with the fuel air stream forming the primary air supply. 2, record 27, English, - suspension%20burner

1, record 27, French, - chaudi%C3%A8re%20%C3%A0%20lit%20en%20suspension

Another innovation is the back-surface reflector(BSR). Even in photovoltaic devices operating at theoretical maximum efficiency, less than 40% of the light to which it is sensitive is absorbed by the cell and converted to electricity. The rest travels through unabsorbed and becomes a system loss. However, the BSR reflects this light back through the cell for a second pass, which greatly increases the conversion efficiency. Also, the BSR reflects radiation to which the cell is not sensitive. This radiation is called out-of-band radiation, and cannot be converted to electricity with this given material bandgap. By reflecting the out-of-band radiation back through the cell, it passes back out the front to the heat source where it is recycled.(Essentially, it helps keep the heat source hot so less fuel is required.) 2, record 29, English, - back%20surface%20reflector

An atomic absorption spectrophotometer measures element concentrations in solution by spraying(nebulising) the solution into a long narrow hot flame. Light from a hollow cathode lamp, containing the element to be analysed, passes above the long and narrow burner to a monochromator. The monochromator isolates ground state radiation from the hollow cathode lamp. The solution is sprayed into the fuel and air premixing chamber feeding the flame. Free atoms are produced in the flame because of the heat and reducing conditions. If the atoms are the same as the element in the lamp, then light is absorbed. The degree of absorption depends on the amount of that element present in the original solution. The results are compared with standard solutions which allow concentrations to be determined. The technique can be highly precise and accurate. 2, record 33, English, - atomic%20absorption%20spectrometer

A small yet growing opportunity exists for biochemists and engineers interested in turning "extremozymes" into industrial catalysts. In nature, these peculiar enzymes fuel microbes that live in scalding sea vents, hot springs, and other adverse locales. Such hardiness means extremozymes might function in hotter, more high-pressure manufacturing conditions than can today's industrial enzymes. As a result, extremozymes could speed up or maximize reactions used to make food, detergents, and drugs; remediate toxic waste; and drill for oil. 1, record 38, English, - extremozyme

In respect of a boiler, "heat output" relates to the energy value of the useful hot water or steam produced. In considering electricity generation, however, the overall thermal efficiency is the total energy value of the electricity "sent out", expressed as a percentage of the energy value(gross as fired) of the fuel used. This overall concept takes account of both boiler and steam turbine losses. A modern power station achieves about 35 per cent thermal efficiency. 4, record 47, English, - thermal%20efficiency
