Deep in the Earth’s crust, where it is very hot, salty water (called brine) circulates and dissolves these metals, collecting them up and concentrating them in the hot brine. ... 2, record 10, French, - brai%20%C3%A0%20couverture

Earth’s outermost, rigid, rocky layer is called the crust. It is composed of low-density, easily melted rocks; the continental crust is predominantly granitic rock, while composition of the oceanic crust corresponds mainly to that of basalt and gabbro. Analyses of seismic waves, generated by earthquakes within Earth’s interior, show that the crust extends about 50 km (30 miles) beneath the continents but only 5-10 km (3-6) miles beneath the ocean floors. 4, record 12, English, - Earth%26rsquo%3Bs%20crust

A tall iron cylinder lined with firebrick and packed inside with chequer brickwork. The hot gas from the blast furnace, which contains about 28% combustible constituents, together with sufficient air to burn it, passes through the stove until the brickwork is heated to redness. The gas and air are then diverted to a second stove, where the same thing is allowed to occur. Meanwhile the air-blast to the tuyères is passed through the hot brickwork of the firststove, until the brickwork has cooled. The air-blast is thus pre-heated to a temperature of from 700 °C to 800 °C. Cowper stoves work in pairs and are alternatively used to absorb and to emit heat. 3, record 34, English, - Cowper%20stove

A term used in reference to a method of producing metal tubes(usually in iron or steel or certain non-ferrous metals) from a hot billet. The billet is guided between a pair of rolls that are bevelled and inclined at a small angle to one another. This ensures that the billet is gripped and spun at high speed as it is forced over a tapered plug. This latter opens up the hole in the billet.

Iron and Brass work. The over-lapping doors of early buffets and armoires required a special type of hinge called a fische hinge(fiche). The pivot or pins of these hinges were made of cast iron and had wrought-iron tenons wrapped around them while red hot. The tenon of the upper part was fitted into a mortise on the side of the door while the tenon of the lower part was mortised into the side-posts of the furniture. The tips of the pins were shaped like balusters, or urns. 1, record 40, English, - fische%20hinge
