Scientists at the University of Colorado, Boulder, had developed a first and fully re-healable and recyclable electronic material. This novel technology functions like properties of human skin, capable of measuring pressure, temperature and vibration. Technically, it's a self-healing robot[, ] for instance if robots are wrapped in an electronic material that mimics... human skin[, ] theoretically it can also sense objects that are too hot or too cold or if more or less pressure needs to be exerted on an object. If this material is beyond repair, then it can be soaked in a solution that separates out the silver nanoparticles then be fully recycled into new usable material... 1, record 2, English, - self%2Dhealing%20robot

The preliminary mechanical processing of the dried [hemp] stalks involves some fairly vigorous handling of the raw material, including breaking, scutching and the separation of the line fibres from the tow and other by-products. The stronger, more solid fibre bundles keep their original lengths and parallelism. During breaking and scutching the weaker and shorter fibres(tow), especially those at the foot of the stalks, break away and are removed together with the hurds, dust, soil, etc.... The hurds are removed pneumatically and may be sold for use as natural fertiliser, for the heat insulation of buildings, as fuel or as animal litter... The hemp tow is then passed through a conveyer drier that can use either hot or cold air. 1, record 4, English, - hemp%20tow

Asphalt Concrete mixes made with asphalt cement are prepared at an asphalt mixing plant. Here, aggregates are blended, heated, dried, and mixed with asphalt cement to produce a hot mix asphalt(HMA).... Asphalt Concrete plants are basically of two types, batch or drum mix. The two types of asphalt plants derive their names from their particular type mixing operation. In the batch-type mixing plant, hot aggregate and asphalt are withdrawn in desired amounts to make up one batch for mixing. After mixing, the thoroughly mixed material is discharged from the pugmill in one batch. In the drum-type mixing plant, the aggregate is dried, heated, and mixed with the asphaltic cement in the drum in a continuous operation. 2, record 9, English, - asphalt%20concrete%20plant

Hot runner molds. Thermoplastic runners are reground and reused. A logical extension of the three-plate mold overcomes this and is called a hot runner mold. This mold has a hot runner plate, which is a block of steel heated with electric cartridges, thermostatically controlled. This keeps the plastic fluid. The material is received from the injection cylinder and is forced through the hot runner blocks into the cavities. Coated Felts. Some current thinking favours the use of coated organic roofing felts instead of saturated felts for the construction of built-up roofing membranes. In this case, the bitumen required for waterproofing has already been applied in a uniform coating at the manufacturing plant, and application is essentially the sticking together of sufficient layers to give the strength required. The heavier grades of coated felt have been used for many years in this and other countries as a single-layer roofing material on simply pitched roofs of barns and sheds. In more sophisticated roofing systems, several layers of coated felt are used with hot or cold adhesives and a surface protection of gravel or weathering coat of clay-stabilized asphalt emulsion. 2, record 16, English, - coated%20felt

Feutres recouverts d'enduit. 2, record 16, French, - feutre%20enduit

Runners can be classified into two types, namely the cold runner and the hot runner. The mold temperature for the cold runner is similar to the mold temperature for the cavity. Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas(without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. Geomembranes made in situ(ie, at the construction site) are usually continuous(ie, with no seam) and are made by spraying or otherwise placing a hot or cold viscous material onto a substrate. The geomembranes made by spraying are commonly referred to as "spray-applied geomembranes" or "spray-on geomembranes". The base product of the sprayed material is commonly asphalt, an asphalt-elastomer compound... or a polymer such as polyurethane. The sprayed material forms a continuous flexible film with little or no tack after curing. If the material is applied onto an existing surface(ie, earth or concrete) the spray-applied geomembrane is non-reinforced. If the material is applied onto a fabric or geotextile, the resulting membrane is reinforced.... 1, record 31, English, - spray%2Dapplied%20geomembrane

The plasma spray process is basically the spraying of molten or heat softened material onto a surface to provide a coating. Material in the form of powder is injected into a very high temperature plasma flame, where it is rapidly heated and accelerated to a high velocity. The hot material impacts on the substrate surface and rapidly cools forming a coating. This plasma spray process carried out correctly is called a "cold process"(relative to the substrate material being coated) as the substrate temperature can be kept low during processing avoiding damage, metallurgical changes and distortion to the substrate material. 1, record 33, English, - plasma%20spray%20process

The rotary dryer, sometimes known as a rotary kiln, is a type of industrial dryer employed to reduce or minimize the moisture content of the material it is handling by bringing it into direct contact with heated gas. The dryer is made up of a large, rotating cylindrical tube, usually supported by concrete columns or steel beams. The dryer slopes slightly so that the discharge end is lower than the material feed end in order to convey the material through the dryer under gravity. Material to be dried enters the higher end of the dryer, and as the dryer rotates, the material is lifted up by a series of internal fins lining the inner wall of the dryer. When the material gets high enough to roll back off the fins, it falls back down to the bottom of the dryer, passing through the hot air stream as it falls. 1, record 39, English, - rotary%20kiln

This machine usually consists of two small washing or scouring tanks, drying cylinders, and a straightening gill-box. It is made in several forms, for each type certain constructional advantages or advantages for the material treated being claimed. It is employed either before or after combing to thoroughly clean worsted slivers or "tops, "for not only does the wool become sullied in passing through the several preparing machines, but impurities which cannot be extracted in the scouring bowls have revealed themselves and may here be conveniently got rid of. The process of "blueing" to give a white appearance to the slivers or tops is frequently resorted to, and is usually affected on the backwasher. The latest innovation in this machine is the adoption of hot air drying in place of cylinder drying. 3, record 43, English, - backwasher

CMC Blisk Material Development and Testing. Engineers at MSFC are developing fabrication processes and designs for ceramic matrix composite(CMC) components through material and component testing, structural modeling, microscopy, and nondestructive analysis techniques. CMCs will be utilized extensively on future generation launch vehicles for propulsion systems and for vehicle hot structure. They are necessary to enable lightweight components capable of operating over a wide temperature range. These advantages translate into increased safety and lower cost compared to state-of-the-art materials. MSFC is primarily responsible for developing CMCs and transitioning them into propulsion applications such as cooled and radiation cooled flow paths, thrust chambers, integrally bladed disks(blisks) and nozzles. Hot structures for leading edge and control surface applications are also supported. 2, record 47, English, - hot%20structure

Another innovation is the back-surface reflector(BSR). Even in photovoltaic devices operating at theoretical maximum efficiency, less than 40% of the light to which it is sensitive is absorbed by the cell and converted to electricity. The rest travels through unabsorbed and becomes a system loss. However, the BSR reflects this light back through the cell for a second pass, which greatly increases the conversion efficiency. Also, the BSR reflects radiation to which the cell is not sensitive. This radiation is called out-of-band radiation, and cannot be converted to electricity with this given material bandgap. By reflecting the out-of-band radiation back through the cell, it passes back out the front to the heat source where it is recycled.(Essentially, it helps keep the heat source hot so less fuel is required.) 2, record 50, English, - back%20surface%20reflector

Briefly, in the mashing process, coarse-ground malt and adjunct are mashed to extract a maximum amount of solubilized material. The mash is then "lautered" i. e., filtered through a bed of its own insolube material, primarily barley hulls. The filtrate or liquid extract, known as "wort", is then boiled and hops are added for aroma and flavour. Air-Rectification of Refinery Bitumen : Bitumen produced by straight steam-refining from certain crude oils may be deficient in the components of very high molecular weight which are insoluble in heptane, the "asphaltene" fraction... It is the common practice of bitumen producers in the United Kingdom to increase the asphaltene content of low-asphaltene material by oxidation of the hot straight-run bitumen by a current of air blown through it. Polystyrene foam comes in two major categories, expanded bead, and extruded. Expanded bead foam is made by superheating small pellets of styrene so that they rapidly expand (sort of like popcorn) to form a low density foam. Expanded bead foam is light (about 1.5 pounds per cubic foot typically) and inexpensive, and because of the way it is made, lends itself to all types of molded products. It is the type of foam found in beer coolers and most contour packaging. It is also used as a cheap insulator. Because expanded bead foam has air pockets between the beads, it is less suitable for exterior use, for flotation, or for any application where water or water vapor can invade the air pockets between beads. 1, record 61, English, - expanded%20bead%20foam

Bead Foam. This material is produced from expandable polystyrene beads(granules)... There are two methods used in the preparation of the beads. In one, polymer granules are heated with a blowing agent(usually a hydrocarbon) that penetrates them. In the second method styrene monomer is polymerized in the presence of a blowing agent so that the blowing agent becomes entrapped in the plastic beads.... The expandable beads are converted to foam as follows. They are subjected to heating by steam, hot water or hot air to give pre-expanded beads; aged(or conditioned) for a period of time; the pre-expanded beads again heated(in a mould) so that they undergo additional expansion, flow to fill the interstices(spaces between particles) and fuse. This results in an integral moulded piece. 2, record 61, English, - expanded%20bead%20foam

1, record 61, French, - mousse%20moul%C3%A9e

Another process somewhat related to injection blow-molding is dip blow molding used for small containers. The process has the advantage of reducing some of the molded-in stress. A core rod is inserted into a cupel, displacing resin and packing it into the neck finish area. As the core rod moves away, a predetermined amount of resin is permitted to remain on the rod. A hot knife cuts the hot plastic, separating the material on the rod from the melt pool in the cupel. The core rod is then rotated to the blow station for blow molding. Hesta is a supplier of this type of machinery. 3, record 68, English, - dip%20blow%20molding

Insulated runner molds. A combination between a hot runner mold and a three-plate mold is called an insulated runner mold. The gating system is very similar to that of a three-plate mold except that the runners are very thick, at least 1 3/4in.(45mm) in diameter. There is no runner plate, and the backup plate and A plate are held together by latches. After the material is injected, the outside of the runner freezes but insulates the center, permitting the core to remain fluid at molding temperatures and act as a hot runner. 1, record 70, English, - insulated%20runner%20mold

Thermoset molding. Thermosetting materials can be molded on reciprocating screw machines. The screw is designed differently and the barrel is usually heated with hot water. When thermosets are molded, the heating cylinder provides just enough heat to start exothermic cross-linking chemical reactions between the two monomers. The material must be transferred quickly into the mold and cannot be permitted to cool in the cylinder. If it does, the screw has to be removed and the thermosetting material chipped out. 1, record 71, English, - thermoset%20molding

Current is led out of the [electrolytic reduction] cell to the anode bus bar by a number of carbon block anodes suspended in parallel rows on vertical conducting rods of copper or aluminum. Because impurities in the anodes dissolve in the bath as they are consumed, pure carbon(calcined petroleum coke or pitch coke) is used as raw material. The ground coke is mixed hot with enough coal tar or petroleum pitch to bond it into a block when pressed in a mold to form the "green" anode. Venting. When the hot plastic is injected into the mold it displaces air. In a well-built, properly clamped mold without vents, the injection material may compress the air. The heat of compression might burn the material. The force of the compression might open the mold, causing flash. The resistance of the compressed air might prevent the mold from completely filling. These problems are alleviated by used of vents, which are usually ground on the parting line. Their size depends on the nature of the material and the size of the cavity. 2, record 73, English, - venting

The process of through-drying... Essentially, a hot, unsaturated gas is passed through a wet, porous material(e. g., the tissue web) by imposing a pressure differential across the material. As the hot gas passes through, heat is transferred to evaporate the water, and the gas leaves at a reduced temperature and with increased water vapor content. The intimate contact between the hot gas and the web, coupled with the large internal surface area of the porous material, produces exceptionally high drying rates. 1, record 78, English, - through%2Ddryer
