Thermo-osmotic energy conversion(TOEC) is an emerging process that efficiently extracts energy from low-grade heat sources. By utilizing a temperature gradient, TOEC induces a partial vapor pressure difference across a hydrophobic membrane. This pressure gradient drives the vapor from the hot feed side through the membrane's pores to the cold permeate side. The movement of water from the hot feed side to the permeate side of the membrane results in excess fluid in the cold reservoir, generating a pressurized flow that can be harnessed to drive a turbine and generate electricity. 1, record 2, English, - thermo%2Dosmotic%20energy%20conversion

Steam reformers are systems that produce synthesis gas, a mixture of carbon monoxide(CO) and hydrogen(H2). In this process, light hydrocarbons such as natural gas are separated-using hot water vapor and a catalyst-into CO and H2. In a subsequent step, the CO is then converted into carbon dioxide(CO2) using steam, generating additional quantities of hydrogen. The gas mixture is then cleaned and the CO2 and other unwanted constituents removed. 2, record 3, English, - steam%20reformer

Strip casting technology permits the production of hot strips, also referred to as hot rolled coiled steel, directly from the liquid crude steel. Casting and rolling are linked into one continuous operation. Strip casting technology is ... the last technology in realizing direct casting. ... direct casting has been realized in a step-wise fashion: the thickness of the sheet or strip cast has been reduced by three innovative technologies, conventional continuous casting, thin slab casting and strip casting technology ... The introduction of thin slab casting (1989) let the liquid steel be cast in thinner slabs ... Blooms and billets cannot be produced with a thin slab caster. Thin slab casting technology integrates casting and the finishing operations in the hot rolling section of a steel plant. The cast slabs are charged directly into a reheater and subsequently fed into the hot rolling mill. The reheating capacity for hot rolling the slabs is thus reduced. 2, record 11, English, - thin%2Dslab%20casting

Combustion Override Split Production Horizontal Well Process(COSH). The main feature of this process, developed by the Alberta Research Council(ARC), is implementation of gravity drainage using a basal horizontal well in a combustion process. The configuration of different wells is critical to the operation of this process. A linear configuration of vertical air injection wells is drilled and completed in the upper portion of the reservoir. A horizontal oil production well is completed in the bottom of the reservoir, aligned and positioned beneath the vertical injection wells. The reservoir is prepared for ignition and combustion is initiated at each of the injection wells. A hot fluid-transmissive chamber is formed around each of the injection wells as combustion proceeds. Combustion gas communication is established with the gas production wells. Heated oil and water, produced by the combustion front in each hot chamber, drains under the effect of gravity and is brought to the surface through the horizontal production well. 3, record 18, English, - combustion%20override%20split%20production%20horizontal%20well%20process

2, record 18, French, - combustion%20in%20situ%20avec%20puits%20de%20production%20horizontal

Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas(without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. The heat-welded, permanently fused seams on vinyl roofing membrane form a watertight seal, and their peel strength can be critical to the roof system's long-term performance against wind forces. 3, record 22, English, - monolithic%20layer

Vapex (vapor extraction) is a relatively new process for the recovery of heavy oil and bitumen that involves the injection of a vaporized solvent to reduce the viscosity of the oil. The diluted oil is then allowed to drain into a production well under the influence of gravity. It is a potentially economic process that can be applied to reservoirs that are not suitable for thermal recovery method. In addition, the process has the potential to sequester greenhouse gases, and is capable of in situ upgrading of heavy oil. 3, record 25, English, - vapour%20extraction

The VAPEX process uses saturated hydrocarbon solvent vapour (ethane, propane or butane) in conjunction with horizontal wells to mobilize and recover viscous oils and bitumens from hydrocarbon deposits in which the bottom water zone (aquifer) is used to deliver the solvent vapour to the base of the reservoir. The process involves injecting a hydrocarbon solvent into the reservoir along with a displacement gas to mobilize the hydrocarbons in the reservoir and move them toward the production well. 8, record 25, English, - vapour%20extraction

The plasma spray process is basically the spraying of molten or heat softened material onto a surface to provide a coating. Material in the form of powder is injected into a very high temperature plasma flame, where it is rapidly heated and accelerated to a high velocity. The hot material impacts on the substrate surface and rapidly cools forming a coating. This plasma spray process carried out correctly is called a "cold process"(relative to the substrate material being coated) as the substrate temperature can be kept low during processing avoiding damage, metallurgical changes and distortion to the substrate material. 1, record 30, English, - plasma%20spray%20process

6, record 31, French, - degr%C3%A9%2Djour%20unifi%C3%A9

hot spot effect. If several cells in a solar module are shaded, the ones not shaded still produce electricity, which flows through the series connections to the shaded cells that now act as blocking diodes. The great resistance causes the cells to overheat; they may even be destroyed in the process. In the MEA [mono-ethanol amine] process... the gases go to the absorption column where the carbon dioxide binds to the solvent chemically. This machine usually consists of two small washing or scouring tanks, drying cylinders, and a straightening gill-box. It is made in several forms, for each type certain constructional advantages or advantages for the material treated being claimed. It is employed either before or after combing to thoroughly clean worsted slivers or "tops, "for not only does the wool become sullied in passing through the several preparing machines, but impurities which cannot be extracted in the scouring bowls have revealed themselves and may here be conveniently got rid of. The process of "blueing" to give a white appearance to the slivers or tops is frequently resorted to, and is usually affected on the backwasher. The latest innovation in this machine is the adoption of hot air drying in place of cylinder drying. 3, record 41, English, - backwasher

The machine consists of three basic modules, each feeding the next. First comes the "feeding-collating unit, "into which pages from a digital printer are deposited... These are the "book-block" pages, not the covers... Pages are fed, one at a time, from the bottom of the stack by a vacuum-feed mechanism. The first page of a set contains bar codes or other machine-readable information, which will be used to make sure the proper cover is applied. The information can also be used to verify that the correct number of pages are in the book block. Once all the pages for the first book have been fed, they are jogged(to get them properly aligned) and dropped into a cassette loader to await binding. Next comes the transfer unit, which consists primarily of a robotic arm that picks up the book block from the next available cassette and places it into the binding unit... Finally, there is the binding unit. This puts the book block through a conventional milling, nipping and hot gluing process, and then adds the cover. 1, record 42, English, - bookbinding%20machine

In partnership with the Alberta Oilsands Technical Authority(AOSTRA) in 1979 the pressure cycle steam drive system was developed. This process takes advantage of a basal water zone, which underlies the oil sands in this area, to heat the oil sands deposit from below. Once a hot communication path is established between wells, continuous steam injection is begun, with the injection and production rates controlled to alternately pressure up and blow down the reservoir. 1, record 46, English, - pressure%20cycle%20steam%20drive%20system

1, record 46, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20de%20d%C3%A9placement%20par%20la%20vapeur%20d%27eau

Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Ph levels and temperature are key variables in the process. 2, record 47, English, - hot%20water%20extraction%20process

Receiving hoods are positioned to catch contaminants that are discharged from an operation in a predictable direction. Examples of receiving hoods include canopies located over a hot process in which hot exhaust fumes rise to the hood level by their own buoyancy, and hoods located adjacent to grinding wheels to catch the stream of dust generated by the spinning wheel. Receiving hoods may physically resemble capture hoods, but they differ with respect to the principle used for contaminant capture. Capture hoods operate at a higher flow rate to generate the air velocities necessary to capture contaminants from a source some distance from the hood opening. Receiving hoods, on the other hand, are positioned to catch the stream of contaminants delivered to them by forces intrinsic to the operation. 1, record 53, English, - capture%20hood

Advanced Gradient Heating Facility(AGHF)... The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample(a temperature gradient). It provides an extremely stable temperature environment of up to 1, 400°C, high-temperature gradients of up to 100°C/cm in the solidification zone, slow movement of the gradient across a sample to provide slow growth rates, efficient cooling through the use of a liquid metal cooling ring attached to the sample container, and Peltier pulse marking capability. The AGHF consists of three modules mounted in one side of a Spacelab double rack : the Core Facility Module contains the processing chamber with the furnace inside; the Electronics Module contains the controls and equipment necessary to operate the furnace; and the Gas Storage Module contains argon for chamber repressurization and sample cooling. 2, record 59, English, - advanced%20gradient%20heating%20facility

Seismic Monitoring of "Hot" and "Cold" Heavy Oil Production.... The application of seismic monitoring for "cold flow" mapping is even more challenging. In "cold flow" heavy oil production of oil sands, we see the development of high porosity zones known as "wormholes". These high porosity zones are much smaller than a seismic wavelength so their detection will be extremely difficult. Nevertheless, it is interesting to speculate whether time-lapse seismology has a role to play in the reservoir characterization of "cold flow" as well as in steam injection.... Emerging Interest in Seismic Monitoring of "Cold Flow" and "Wormholes". In addition to the production of heavy oil from the steam injection in Pikes Peak field, there is production from "cold flow" heavy oil fields in the surrounding areas. In the "cold flow" production process, oil and sand are simultaneously produced in unconsolidated heavy oil reservoirs by using non-thermal extraction. 2, record 60, English, - cold%20flow%20production

Thermomechanical steam treatment(TM-V). The defibrillation is accomplished by a short time steam treatment followed by a flash decompression. This process was patented by Mason(1928) and has constituted the technological basis for the production of a wide range of fiberboards. In the 1970's, the potential of this technique as a defibration and fractionation process was fully realized. Pilot and industrial installations derived from this technology are known under the generic name of "steam explosion methods"... The TM-V processes literally force the destructuring and eventual disintegration of the lignocellulosic wall structure. The hemicelluloses and a small part of the lignin can be extracted by hot water washing. The residue of this operation can be further extracted with an alkaline solution or with organic solvents in order to solubilize the lignin which can then be recovered by precipitation. Cellulose is obtained as the solid residue after the lignin extraction. 1, record 62, English, - thermomechanical%20steam%20treatment

1, record 62, French, - traitement%20thermom%C3%A9canique%20%C3%A0%20la%20vapeur

Why Floor Insulation Works. Heat doesn’t rise. The myth that heat rises was used for many years to justify not insulating floors at all. That led to some very cold feet. It's hot air that rises. An air mass that is warmer than the air around it will rise in relation to that cooler air. The process of hot air rising is called convection. It's only one way that heat can escape a building. Two others are conduction and radiation. Floor insulation limits all three modes of heat loss. A warmer floor reduces the temperature difference that drives convection. Floor insulation also directly impedes conduction and radiation to the colder air below the floor. 1, record 66, English, - floor%20insulation

Extruded polystyrene [XEPS] foam begins with solid polystyrene crystals. The crystals, along with special additives and a blowing agent, are fed into an extruder. Within the extruder the mixture is combined and melted, under controlled conditions of high temperature and pressure, into a viscous plastic fluid. The hot, thick liquid is then forced in a continuous process through a die. As it emerges from the die it expands to a foam, is shaped, cooled, and trimmed to dimension. This continuous extrusion process results in a unique foam product with a uniform closed-cell structure, a smooth continuous skin, and consistent product qualities, qualities unequaled by other insulation types. 6, record 72, English, - extruded%20polystyrene%20foam

Extruded polystyrene foam ... There is considerable confusion about extruded foam, mainly because it is made by many different companies, and appears in many different colors and densities. There is "artboard", green foam, pink foam, gray foam, blue foam and more. All of these are extruded polystyrene. The lowest density extruded styrene foams all range about 1.75 pounds per cubic foot. Curiously, extruded foam panels from the same manufacturer exhibit considerable variation in density ... ranging from 1.8 to 2.1 pounds per cubic foot, all in the same batch. ... Different manufacturers also produce different qualities of extruded foam. Some foam seems to have more impurities and air bubbles than others. 7, record 72, English, - extruded%20polystyrene%20foam

1, record 72, French, - mousse%20de%20polystyr%C3%A8ne%20extrud%C3%A9e

The condenser is also a Model no. 06036 shell and tube exchanger, identical to the reboiler with a few modifications: The baffles have been cut at the bottom where they meet the shell to allow condensate to flow out of the shell. The tube side has four passes for maximum heat transfer on the tube side. It is mounted nearly horizontally. The inlet end is a couple of inches higher than the outlet to allow condensate to drain out the low end. A few tubes have been removed at the top to give the vapor more room to distribute itself along the length of the shell. There is a vent on the shell side near the outlet end to allow non-condensable gases to leave. The vent gases pass through the inside of a 36" double pipe condenser so that any condensable gasses will condense out and run down the walls back into the condenser. 2, record 74, English, - double%2Dpipe%20exchanger

Another process somewhat related to injection blow-molding is dip blow molding used for small containers. The process has the advantage of reducing some of the molded-in stress. A core rod is inserted into a cupel, displacing resin and packing it into the neck finish area. As the core rod moves away, a predetermined amount of resin is permitted to remain on the rod. A hot knife cuts the hot plastic, separating the material on the rod from the melt pool in the cupel. The core rod is then rotated to the blow station for blow molding. Hesta is a supplier of this type of machinery. 3, record 82, English, - dip%20blow%20molding

Less obvious, but supported by increasing evidence, is the significant part played by living organisms, especially bacteria and algae, on the precipitation of metals from solutions. The process may take place from surface solutions at atmospheric temperature and pressure or from hot solutions of igneous origin. Bacterial precipitation may occur on the bottom of lakes or inland seas, for example the currently active precipitation of metals on the floor of parts of the Red Sea. The close association of life with metalliferous solutions on the floors of oceans was spectacularly shown in an illustrated article in the National Geographic Magazine(Vol. 156, No. 5) of November 1979. 1, record 88, English, - metal%2Dbearing%20solution

The process of through-drying... Essentially, a hot, unsaturated gas is passed through a wet, porous material(e. g., the tissue web) by imposing a pressure differential across the material. As the hot gas passes through, heat is transferred to evaporate the water, and the gas leaves at a reduced temperature and with increased water vapor content. The intimate contact between the hot gas and the web, coupled with the large internal surface area of the porous material, produces exceptionally high drying rates. 1, record 90, English, - through%2Ddryer

A variation of flash drying is embodied in the so-called "steam dryer", where fluffed pulp is dried in a medium of slightly superheated low-pressure steam rather than in hot air. Heat is transferred to the pulp and transport steam by indirectly condensing higher-pressure steam. The water evaporated from the pulp is removed from the steam as low-pressure steam suitable for process use in the pulp or paper mill. It is claimed that net heat consumption can be as low as one-fourth of that used in a conventional drying system. 1, record 95, English, - steam%20dryer

1, record 98, French, - Thermovortactor

Workpieces having dimensions less than 4 in. can be powder coated with a device known as an electrostatic fluidized bed. In this process, powder is held in a container having an open top and a porous bottom through which an upward flow of air causes the powder mass to levitate or "fluidize". Charging electrodes near the surface impart an electrical charge to the powder. Electrically grounded workpieces pass over the surface of the bed and collect a coating of powder. The coating is then cured in a baking oven. There are techniques for applying dry powder coatings without the use of electrostatics.... These processes typically involve preheating the workpiece to a temperature substantially above the melting point of the powder and then applying the powder, either by dipping the workpiece into a fluidized bed or by spraying air-suspended powder directly onto the hot surface of the workpiece. The powder melts immediately upon contact and flows to form a film, which is subsequently cured in a bake oven. 2, record 100, English, - sublimation%20coating

1, record 100, French, - rev%C3%AAtement%20appliqu%C3%A9%20par%20sublimation
