The bitumen extraction processes initially used by GCOS [Great Canadian Oil Sands] and Syncrude were based on the Hot Water Extraction Method... Oil sands ore is moved from the base mine dump pocket by conveyor and enters large rotating tumblers where the ore is slurried... to condition it for bitumen separation. The aerated slurry from the tumblers discharges into vibrating screens where large materials... are rejected. The slurry is diluted in pump boxes and pumped to the Primary Separation Vessels(PSV), where bitumen rises to the surface as a froth and is skimmed off, while the sand settles to the bottom.

Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Ph levels and temperature are key variables in the process.

Seismic Monitoring of "Hot" and "Cold" Heavy Oil Production.... The application of seismic monitoring for "cold flow" mapping is even more challenging. In "cold flow" heavy oil production of oil sands, we see the development of high porosity zones known as "wormholes". These high porosity zones are much smaller than a seismic wavelength so their detection will be extremely difficult. Nevertheless, it is interesting to speculate whether time-lapse seismology has a role to play in the reservoir characterization of "cold flow" as well as in steam injection.... Emerging Interest in Seismic Monitoring of "Cold Flow" and "Wormholes". In addition to the production of heavy oil from the steam injection in Pikes Peak field, there is production from "cold flow" heavy oil fields in the surrounding areas. In the "cold flow" production process, oil and sand are simultaneously produced in unconsolidated heavy oil reservoirs by using non-thermal extraction.

Explication : Des réservoirs d'huiles lourdes sont produits au Canada par simple pompage à l'aide de pompes à cavité progressive («PCP pumps») qui permettent de produire du sable en même temps que l'huile. La production du sable provoquerait in-situ des chenaux de fortes perméabilités («wormholes»), ce qui éviterait d'injecter de la vapeur pour produire ce type de réservoir. Le conditionnel est utilisé ici car pour l'instant il n'y a pas de preuve directe de l'existence de ces chenaux. Cependant, il y a de fortes présomptions qu'ils existent sinon on ne pourrait pas expliquer certaines observations faites sur champ, comme par exemple l'arrivée, en quelques minutes, de boue de forage dans un puits situé à plusieurs centaines de mètres d'un puits en cours de forage. Normalement, pour aller d'un puits à l'autre dans le réservoir, la boue devrait mettre plusieurs semaines ou même plusieurs mois.

Les différentes techniques de production de brut lourd peuvent être soit du type «primaire» soit du type «amélioré». Suivant les caractéristiques de l'huile et de la roche réservoir l'une ou l'autre sera employée. La production primaire [...] est envisageable pour les huiles lourdes grâce à la technologie dite du «puits horizontal». Cette technique permet en effet d'améliorer considérablement la productivité d'un puits et d'augmenter le taux de récupération ultime. Elle est utilisée au Venezuela pour produire «à froid» (sans réchauffage de l'huile) les bruts extra-lourds de l'Orénoque de façon rentable. Elle n'est cependant pas adaptée aux formations non consolidées où la production de sable associé à l'huile est relativement importante.

spouted bed gasifier.... a single-chamber air-fed gasifier operated on a cyclical basis, to yield a high calorific-value gas essentially uncontaminated by carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Wood chips or wood pellets are fed on top of a bed of hot sand in the reactor, and are then mixed by spouting the bed using steam. Some gasification occurs during this phase, but most takes place during the ensuing "cooking" phase during which the bed is static. When the temperature has fallen to a suitably low value air is admitted to burn the char and raise the temperature of the sand to its original value. Wood is then added to begin a new cycle.
