English

Subject field(s)
  • Prefabrication
  • Pipes and Fittings
  • Electrical Wiring (Building Elements)
DEF

Prefabricated pipes for hot and cold water supplies, wastes, drains, and gas, as well as prepared cable for electric services, all ready for installation with the minimum of site work in an industrialized building method.

CONT

A set of prefabricated elements ... has had impact of various degrees upon prefabrication. The most important of these is the utility core in which kitchen, bath, and laundry are arranged along opposite sides of a common wall containing electric power, water, and drainage.

OBS

The terms "sanitary core" and "plumbing services" are given as synonyms of "mechanical core" by SCOBU (A dictionary of building), but actually they are more specific in scope.

Subject field(s)
  • Roofs (Building Elements)
CONT

A built-up roofing consists of plies or layers of roofing felt bonded together on site with hot bitumen. A protective surface coating of gravel or slag is sometimes embedded in a heavy top coating of hot bitumen. It is laid down to conform to the roof deck, and to protect all angles formed by the roof deck with projecting surfaces, and forms a single-unit flexible waterproofed membrane fastened to the deck by cementing and nailing. The simple principle on flat roofs is to turn the membrane up to form a skirting or base flashing on the vertical surfaces, making a large watertight tray. The only outlets from this tray are the roof drains to dispose of water.

Domaine(s)
  • Toitures (Éléments du bâtiment)
DEF

CONT

Geomembranes made in situ(ie, at the construction site) are usually continuous(ie, with no seam) and are made by spraying or otherwise placing a hot or cold viscous material onto a substrate. The geomembranes made by spraying are commonly referred to as "spray-applied geomembranes" or "spray-on geomembranes". The base product of the sprayed material is commonly asphalt, an asphalt-elastomer compound... or a polymer such as polyurethane. The sprayed material forms a continuous flexible film with little or no tack after curing. If the material is applied onto an existing surface(ie, earth or concrete) the spray-applied geomembrane is non-reinforced. If the material is applied onto a fabric or geotextile, the resulting membrane is reinforced....

The asphalt rotary dryer is the principal emission source of pollution in the hot-mix asphalt operation.... All conventional hot-mix asphalt plants incorporate the following processes : conveying proportioned quantities of cold aggregate to a dryer; heating and drying the aggregate; screening and classifying the hot aggregate into bins; heating the asphalt; measuring and mixing the aggregate and asphalt in proper proportions; and delivering the hot mixture into trucks which haul it to the paving site.

An interesting phenomenon occurs at Kiabukwa, in that the discharge of hot water from the hot spring fluctuates in a tidal cycle of 12 1/2 hours, although the site is about 1300 Km from the sea. This is probably due to the action of "land tides" opening and closing horizontal subterranean fissures by very small movements which are nevertheless significant in relation to the width of what are probably very narrow fissures.
