In an emergency, the condition of damp grain in storage can in fact be improved by "airing" it simply by circulating the grain through the silo conveying system. In a damp grain emergency, aeration fans can be used to improve conditions in bins and eliminate hot spots by equalizing temperatures. Aerating can be very useful for long-term grain storage.

The prankster's water bomb has matured into a new tool for fighting fires. Instead of low-flying helicopters and small planes pouring water over hot spots, Boeing has devised a way to use its C-17 military transports to bombard blazes with beach ball-size containers loaded with water or fire retardant. Spot application is used to control local infestations in hot spots some distance below the grain surface. The extent of the infested area is determined by probing. The fumigant is then introduced by pouring it into pipes inserted into the infested area on a 1-metre grid. The method is seldom completely successful but is used as a holding measure.
