  • Heat (Physics)
CONT

Thermo-osmotic energy conversion(TOEC) is an emerging process that efficiently extracts energy from low-grade heat sources. By utilizing a temperature gradient, TOEC induces a partial vapor pressure difference across a hydrophobic membrane. This pressure gradient drives the vapor from the hot feed side through the membrane's pores to the cold permeate side. The movement of water from the hot feed side to the permeate side of the membrane results in excess fluid in the cold reservoir, generating a pressurized flow that can be harnessed to drive a turbine and generate electricity.

Gas-fired water heaters have a gas burner located below the tank, a thermostatic switch, a gas valve and a pilot light. The thermostat will open the gas valve when it senses the water temperature at the bottom of the tank has dropped below the present limit. Gas flows to the burner and is ignited by the pilot light, heating the tank from below. In addition, the hot exhaust gases are vented through a hollow core in the center of the tank to help heat the water. Corn steep water.

OBS

Cleaned corn grain is washed thoroughly and then steeped for 36 to 40 hours in approximately twice its volume of water containing 0. 2% SO2 at a temperature of 46-50 [degrees] C. As the steep water is drawn from the corn it contains between 6 and 9 lbs of solids per 100 lbs of water. The corn should be soft to the touch, but must not be slimy or smeary-in the latter case it was steeped either too hot or too long. The steep liquor is then evaporated [under 25 mm Hg pressure] in a "Swenson" evaporator to what is called heavy steep liquor with a gravity of 16 to 20 [degrees] Bé and containing 50-60% of solids. In this form it is sold to manufacturer of antibiotics who may have their own specifications as to age, gravity and SO2 content.

The XB-25E was a standard production modified for anti-icing research. The carburetor air intake duct was faired internally into the top of the cowling and an anti-icing air intake was mounted at the bottom. Each row of cylinders exhausted through a separate exchanger, one ported outboard and one inboard of each nacelle. Ram air from the lower cowling duct was routed underneath the engine to a split duct, each side of which was directed to one of the heat exchangers. Air admitted to these heat exchangers was directed through a series of gates that allowed diversion of heated air either to the anti-icing system or out the exhaust. A complex system of ducting led the hot air to the outer wing leading edges and also into the fuselage and to the leading edges of the tail. It was intended that the temperature of the hot air would be sufficiently high that ice on the wing leading edges surfaces would be vaporized rather than melted, which would have prevented water from flowing aft and then freezing again on flaps and ailerons.

Instead the spent steam is piped into a devise whcih, like a car radiator, cools the steam turning it back in to liquid water(cooling and condensing the steam). That still very hot wtaer is pumped back into the boilers where it is reheated and reused. Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Ph levels and temperature are key variables in the process.

The process of through-drying... Essentially, a hot, unsaturated gas is passed through a wet, porous material(e. g., the tissue web) by imposing a pressure differential across the material. As the hot gas passes through, heat is transferred to evaporate the water, and the gas leaves at a reduced temperature and with increased water vapor content. The intimate contact between the hot gas and the web, coupled with the large internal surface area of the porous material, produces exceptionally high drying rates.

Exhausting includes the removal of air from the filled can and the establishment of conditions whereby the finished canned product will show a substantial degree of vacuum. This can be done by heating the filled can in steam or hot water for several minutes so that the air is driven out and the temperature of the contents is raised considerably. It can also be accomplished by a vacuum closing machine where the air is sucked out by a pump and the lid is sealed on while the suction is being maintained.

Triple aquastat relays... are normally used on heating boilers with a tankless domestic hot water heating coil. These controls perform three functions : high limit protection with low limit and circulator control. The low limit circulator control cycles the burner on and off, maintaining minimum water temperature for domestic hot water. The circulator control prevents the circulator from operating when boiler water temperature is too low to satisfy both domestic water and heating needs. When the thermostat calls for heat, the triple aquastat operates the burner and, if the water temperature is above the low limit setting, it also activates the circulator.

Critical lip pressure method... If hot water or a water/steam mixture is discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe, and if the pressure is measured at the discharge lip of the pipe, this pressure is a measure of the heat flow of the discharged fluid. James has deduced... [a] formula expressed in f. p. s. units... Where the two phases of a water/steam mixture are segregated by means of a cyclone separator the water can be measured either by a cooled orifice or, after allowing for the flashed steam, by means of a V-notch or weir. Alternatively, however, the water may simply be discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe and measured by applying... [James] formula. By measuring the temperature of the water leaving the separator its enthalpy is made known, and... [the flow] can be deduced from... [the critical lip pressure].
