Asphalt Concrete mixes made with asphalt cement are prepared at an asphalt mixing plant. Here, aggregates are blended, heated, dried, and mixed with asphalt cement to produce a hot mix asphalt(HMA).... Asphalt Concrete plants are basically of two types, batch or drum mix. The two types of asphalt plants derive their names from their particular type mixing operation. In the batch-type mixing plant, hot aggregate and asphalt are withdrawn in desired amounts to make up one batch for mixing. After mixing, the thoroughly mixed material is discharged from the pugmill in one batch. In the drum-type mixing plant, the aggregate is dried, heated, and mixed with the asphaltic cement in the drum in a continuous operation.

Most vinyl roofing membranes are sealed using hot air, which can be compared to welding metal. The process joins two rolls of membranes at the overlap areas (without using another dissimilar material) to create one monolithic layer that covers the entire roof. The heat-welded, permanently fused seams on vinyl roofing membrane form a watertight seal, and their peel strength can be critical to the roof system’s long-term performance against wind forces.

ROOF technology allows old roof membrane to be renewed without removal. ROOF technology is based upon a thermochemical treatment of bitumen roof coating. With heat applied to a section of roof coating bitumen and bituminiferous mastics start melting. Imbued with own bitumen, roof coating gains improved waterproofing capabilities. Once cooled such coating becomes a tough monolithic layer, smooth and watertight.

Hot-applied rubberized asphalts consist of proprietary blends of asphalt, mineral fillers, elastomers(natural, synthetic, or a blend of both), virgin or reclaimed oil and a thermoplastic resin. It is applied hot in such a manner as to form an impermeable monolithic membrane over the surface to be waterproofed, which may be concrete, gypsum board or wood. Improved versions of this type of system consist of two coats of rubberized asphalt with a polyester mat in between, called the fully reinforced or two-ply system.

The rotary dryer, sometimes known as a rotary kiln, is a type of industrial dryer employed to reduce or minimize the moisture content of the material it is handling by bringing it into direct contact with heated gas. The dryer is made up of a large, rotating cylindrical tube, usually supported by concrete columns or steel beams. The dryer slopes slightly so that the discharge end is lower than the material feed end in order to convey the material through the dryer under gravity. Material to be dried enters the higher end of the dryer, and as the dryer rotates, the material is lifted up by a series of internal fins lining the inner wall of the dryer. When the material gets high enough to roll back off the fins, it falls back down to the bottom of the dryer, passing through the hot air stream as it falls.

Two types of plants are used to make hot mix asphalt concrete, the batch type mixing plant and the drum mix plant A batch plant mixes, then drops individual batches of hot mix asphalt concrete and a drum mix plant is a continuous flow type of production plant. In a batch type mixing plant different sizes of aggregates are drawn from a multi-bin cold feed system into an enclosed counter flow rotary drum. After the aggregate is dried, it is lifted to the top of the batching tower and on to a screen system which separates the aggregate into different sizes and then drops the different sizes into individual bins. Aggregate is then drawn from the hot bins in predetermined amounts, weighed and dropped into a pug mill mixer with the correct amount of liquid asphalt. The batch is mixed, then dropped into a waiting truck or sent to a surge bin until trucks arrive. In a drum mix plant a metered, four compartment, cold feed bin system supplies the exact amount of the required size of aggregates to the rotating drum mixer The drum mixer is an inclined, parallel flow dryer/mixer in which the aggregate is dried and heated in the upper section of the drum, then mixed with liquid in the lower part of the drum. From the drum the hot mix is discharged into a hot elevator which lifts the finished product to a surge hopper or storage silo both equipped to load trucks.

Another process somewhat related to injection blow-molding is dip blow molding used for small containers. The process has the advantage of reducing some of the molded-in stress. A core rod is inserted into a cupel, displacing resin and packing it into the neck finish area. As the core rod moves away, a predetermined amount of resin is permitted to remain on the rod. A hot knife cuts the hot plastic, separating the material on the rod from the melt pool in the cupel. The core rod is then rotated to the blow station for blow molding. Contreplaqué réalisé en comprimant ses feuillets au moyen d'une presse chauffante.

OBS

On empile (...) les feuillets par nombre impair, 3, 5, 7, selon le type de contreplaqué que l'on veut obtenir, sur une table de composition (...) Les paquets de feuillets ainsi constitués sont ensuite dirigés vers les presses à contreplaqué où ils sont comprimés à chaud pour assurer la pénétration du mélange collant dans les couches du bois et la prise de la colle. Les presses utilisées sont à plateaux chauffants, multi-étages (10, 12, 15 ou plus), la pression appliquée varie de 10 à 12 kg/cm [carré] selon la nature de la colle.

OBS

Ne pas confondre la technique du contreplaqué pressé à chaud avec celle du panneau de particules pressé à chaud. Le terme "contreplaqué pressé à chaud" a été proposé conformément à l'usage de "panneau pressé à chaud", mentionné dans "Le collage du bois", cahier numéro 109, du Centre technique du bois.

Particle Drying. Moist and semidry furnish must be dried before it can be used in the manufacture. Drying is done in a variety of dryers many of which dry the incoming furnish in seconds. Briefly some of these are :(a) The rotary-drum type which moves the particles as the drum revolves....(b) The fixed-drum type....(c) The belt-dryers....(d) Disk dryers....(e) Paddle-trough type dryers made up of tray-shaped, fixed troughs or cylinders through which hot air is circulated while the particles are being kept in motion by stirrers or paddles.

Iron and Brass work. The over-lapping doors of early buffets and armoires required a special type of hinge called a fische hinge(fiche). The pivot or pins of these hinges were made of cast iron and had wrought-iron tenons wrapped around them while red hot. The tenon of the upper part was fitted into a mortise on the side of the door while the tenon of the lower part was mortised into the side-posts of the furniture. The tips of the pins were shaped like balusters, or urns.
