Réacteurs refroidis par gaz. Les réacteurs à haute température refroidis par gaz (RHTRG) sont à l'étude depuis longtemps, et un certain nombre de prototypes ou de centrales de démonstration ont été construits, mais leur exploitation n'a pas été un succès total. Le RHTRG est pour l'essentiel un réacteur dont le modérateur est du graphite et le fluide caloporteur de l'hélium.
