The use of friction against a planet’s atmosphere to slow a spacecraft for insertion into orbit. 3, record 1, English, - aerocapture
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Aerocapture is the technique by which the Martian atmosphere slows down an incoming spacecraft to attain orbit. Instead of braking a spacecraft using conventional thrusters, the thin Martian atmosphere can be used to change the course of the spacecraft into a hyperbolic trajectory encircling the planet. A related process called aerobraking uses atmospheric drag to slow down a vehicle for landing. The most notable example of aerobraking application is the Mars Pathfinder probe. 4, record 1, English, - aerocapture

An escape orbit... is a high-energy parabolic orbit around the central body. A body in this orbit has at each position the escape velocity with respect to this central body, for this position. If this energy were further increased, the orbit would turn to a hyperbolic trajectory. 2, record 3, English, - escape%20orbit
