Commonly known as "snow fleas" these speck-like critters are not true fleas; they belong to a primitive group of insects known as springtails in the order Collembola. Springtails are among the most abundant of all soil-dwelling arthropods.

Les puces des neiges ne sont ni des puces ni des insectes. En fait, ce sont des collemboles, de petits arthropodes, proches cousins des insectes. Ils appartiennent à l’espèce Hypogastrura nivicola. On les nomme communément collemboles nivicoles.

puce des neiges : L'espèce Hypogastrura nivicola n'est pas une puce (ordre des siphonaptères), mais plutôt un collembole (ordre des collemboles). Afin d'éviter toute équivoque, il vaut mieux éviter de la nommer ainsi.
