Trawling questionnaire : This term commonly refers to interview forms designed to capture a wide range of exposures. They are sometimes called “hypothesis-generating” or... shotgun questionnaires. These forms may be designed with embedded questions focused on disease-specific hypotheses, which may serve to consolidate the hypothesis generation and testing processes into a single step. For instance, the trawling questionnaire for an outbreak of E. coli O157 : H7 may contain questions about standard transmission mechanisms for this agent such as hamburger consumption, day-care attendance, recreational pool use, animal exposures... 1, record 1, English, - trawling%20questionnaire
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The nurses asked those who had become ill a battery of questions from a 20-page survey known as a "shotgun" questionnaire that explores potential sources of disease, from animal contact to sources of drinking water to attendance at various locations that could be contaminated. The nurses went through what each person had eaten during the week before the illness struck to attempt to identify what caused the outbreak ... The goal was to find a common element, whether it was a food item or some kind of contact or common location. "It’s like shooting in a barrel hoping to hit something," ... But they did hit something. ... 84% of those who were sickened had eaten a tomato ... 4, record 1, English, - trawling%20questionnaire

In a study, the sample size and the alpha level are set according to the principle that a single null hypothesis will be tested at the end of the study, once all the data have been gathered. If more than one statistical test is undertaken, e. g. pairwise comparisons of several interventions, or tests on different variables, at different timepoints or on different sub-groups, there will be an increase in the planned overall Type I error(alpha) probability. So, back to the beginning : I really don’t like being termed a morphologist or a molecularist. We are presumably aiming at taxonomy and using whatever is available. A person who happens to be adept at DNA sequencing and interpretation is no less using morphology in forming an hypothesis for testing. A person who has the ability to collaborate with a person who is adept at DNA sequencing, ability being physical or philosophical, and refuses, is just plain silly. Equally, the person who is adept at DNA sequencing and who will not collaborate with a person who has mastered the classical aspects of the organisms is not making great contributions. 1, record 20, English, - molecularist

The research project concerns characterization of the expression of the FMR-1 gene in various cultured cells under various conditions of growth or states of differentiation... The research would be more appealing if it were focused on testing a specific hypothesis, particularly one related to the fragile syndrome phenotype or RNA processing.... 1, record 22, English, - fragile%20X%20syndrome%20phenotype

The purpose of this paper is to determine whether styling change does shift automobile demand. Without testing his hypothesis, Menge Z(1962) argued that if styling change is a shift variable, larger firms could use styling changes as a market weapon against smaller firms.(Source : Applied Economics, 1984, vol. 16, p. 291). 2, record 25, English, - shift%20variable
