Echo sounding is the ocean counterpart of land surveying. Acoustic waves propagating through the water column are used to measure depth of the sea floor and draft relief maps similar to land relief maps.

The hypsometric layers of a topographic map at a certain map scale are not visible on the screen, but the actual cursor position can be converted to this hidden hypsometric layer and the identified vertical counter interval can be indicated by a small information window directly positioned at the cursor.

hachure : A short line on a relief map that shows the downhill direction of a slope. The thickness and spacing of these lines indicate the relief. The steeper the slope the thicker the line. This method of relief portrayal is rarely used on today's maps; it has been replaced by contours, shading and hypsometric tints.
