VOLCANIC FALLOUT ... Composite volcanos ... are very explosive and often send huge clouds of ash and other volcanic debris far up into the atmosphere. The ash clouds can cover large areas and can even drop several inches of as thousands of miles from the volcano.

The town was buried by volcanic ash and other material. In places the ash, which is called a volcanic fallout deposit, was more than ten feet thick.

The volcanic fallout from explosive eruptions like Pinatubo is preserved in the polar ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland... and is used to mark reference horizons in the dating of low accumulation ice cores, including those from Vostok, Dome C, and South Pole.
