ICE EXTENT [11 records]

Record 1 2023-03-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
CONT

The climate system is composed of many subsystems that are characterized in models by different physical processes, or even the same process operating in the presence of different external conditions.... For example, consider the cryosphere and polar atmosphere as two climate subsystems, and select ice extent and lower atmospheric temperature, respectively, to represent the subsystem states.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
  • Climate Change
DEF

An Arctic atmospheric pressure pattern characterized by high pressure centered over the northern Beaufort Sea and unusually low pressure centered over the Kara Sea.

CONT

The Arctic dipole anomaly was very well developed throughout the summer of 2007 and was in part responsible for the very low September ice extent recorded that year(the second lowest in the satellite record).

OBS

This pattern contributes to ice loss in summer, causing winds to blow ice away from the coast.

  • Changements climatiques
CONT

Lorsque la pression est élevée dans la région arctique canadienne, les vents liés au dipôle arctique proviennent du sud.

CONT

During the late Foxe Glaciation it is likely that glacier ice contacted the lake, with retreat upvalley recorded by thinly varved silts.

CONT

Late Foxe Glaciation of the Aston Lowland, Baffin Island, Nunavut : support for an Intermediate Ice Extent in the Eastern Canadian Arctic.-... The extent of glaciers and ice sheets during the last(late Foxe) glaciation of eastern Baffin Island has been debated for over 40 years.

CONT

CONT

GOES [geostationary operational environmental satellites] provide visible and infrared radiometer data that are used for imaging purposes, radiation measurements, and temperature profiles. GOES satellite imagery is used to estimate rainfall amounts, snow accumulation, and overall extent of snow cover. In addition, satellite sensors detect ice fields and map the movement of sea and lake ice.

CONT

The visible and infrared radiometer is a standard radiometer that measures the intensity of radiation in five wavelength channels.
