... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds. ... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre ... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 5, English, - sting%20jet
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Sting jets occur in cyclones when there is a dramatic fall in the barometric pressure.... The sting jet is born at an altitude of three miles, within layers of ascending moist air. Streaks or wisps of precipitation, such as water or ice particles, that fall from clouds but evaporate before reaching the ground. 6, record 12, English, - virga
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Virga is frequently seen trailing from altocumulus and altostratus clouds, but also is discernible below the bases of high-level cumuliform clouds from which precipitation is falling into a dry subcloud layer. It typically exhibits a hooked form in which the streaks descend nearly vertically just under the precipitation source but appear to be almost horizontal at their lower extremities. Such curvature of virga can be produced simply by effects of strong vertical wind shear, but ordinarily it results from the fact that droplet or crystal evaporation decreases the particle terminal fall velocity near the ends of the streaks. Under some conditions, virga are associated with dry microbursts, which are formed as a product of the evaporation. 7, record 12, English, - virga

fall streaks :... falling ice crystals that evaporate before reaching the ground. 3, record 13, English, - fall%20streak
Record number: 13, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Fall streaks form when snowflakes and ice crystals fall from cirrus clouds. The change in wind with height and how quickly these ice crystals fall determine the shapes and sizes the fall streaks attain. Since ice crystals fall much more slowly than raindrops, fall streaks tend to be stretched out horizontally as well as vertically. Cirrus streaks may be nearly straight, shaped like a comma, or seemingly all tangled together. Similar to fall streaks is virga, which appears as streamers suspended in the air beneath the base of precipitating clouds. 4, record 13, English, - fall%20streak

A Fall streaks are the wisps that can sometimes be seen falling below high, thin cirrus clouds. They are ice crystals that fall out of the cloud but evaporate as they fall into drier air below. In other words, as cloud droplets fall, air resists their downward motion and the amount of this air resistance is based on the size of the drop and its rate of fall, or velocity. The speed of the falling cloud droplet increases until the air resistance equals the downward pull of gravity and then begins to fall at a constant speed, no longer accelerating downward. This constant speed that is finally reached is called the drop’s terminal velocity, or fall speed. 2, record 16, English, - falling%20speed

Si le milieu nuageux contient de grandes quantités de gouttelettes d'eau condensée en surfusion, leur captation par les germes de glace initiaux est trop rapide pour permettre leur cristallisation immédiate et l'évacuation de la chaleur latente correspondante. Precipitation processes are complex.... Snow crystals begin as minute ice particles which have formed around condensation nuclei in the atmosphere. These nuclei may be dust particles with favorable molecular structure or even minute crystals of sea salt. If these ice particles exist in an atmosphere with an excess supply of water vapor(supersaturated air) they will continue to grow. Upon reaching a critical size, they begin to fall. Depending on the conditions they encounter in different layers of air during their descent, they may continue to grow, may stop growing, or may experience a succession of growth patterns. This theory is based on the fact that the saturation vapour pressure with respect to ice is lower than that with respect to supercooled liquid water at the same temperature. If both types of particles are present and the total water content is high enough, the ice crystals would grow by sublimation at the expense of the liquid drops which would lose mass by evaporation.

1, record 22, Spanish, - teor%C3%ADa%20de%20Bergeron%2DFindeisen

Technical climbing... is a rather loose term, because of variability of style and capability among climbers, but it makes a very useful distinction. Technical routes are those requiring the hardware of modern climbing and the ability to use it. Technical climbing is distinguished from classical techniques relying mainly on ice axes, threading the rope behind gendarmes, and the motto that in really exposed places, "The leader must not fall". In general, technical routes are those classified as fifth and sixth class. 1, record 23, English, - technical%20climbing

The Basics of Technical Rock Climbing. Rock climbing is becoming a specialized sport ... Some of the most difficult and most popular climbs in the world are less than forty feet long and climbers now often focus their energies only on pure power, almost with the intensity of Olympic athletics. 1, record 23, English, - technical%20climbing
