As with any profession, those early years generally involve training and — quite literally — learning the ropes.... Many greenhorns earn a "half share" for their first [fishing] voyage. The most common way of compensating fishermen is via a percentage of the value of the landed catch, after expenses are backed out. Essentially, each deckhand gets a pre-determined share of the profit, after the costs of fuel, ice, food, lubricant, and other potential fees are backed out.

Box nets can be fished at any time in the daily tide cycle and with any frequency. [The fishing] procedure is as follows. The tie-back ropes on one end of the net are slackened; then, this end of the net is gradually hauled onto the ice through the fishing hole. As the net is hauled, fish are "shook back" from the trap into the bunt. The bunt is untied and the fish removed; the bunt is then retied. The tie-back ropes are tightened, hauling the net back into position beneath the ice. Tie-back ropes are secured.

Capital costs, that is, the cost of vessels, fishing gear, processing plants, and so on, would be affected by climate change if additional capital for fishing and processing operations is required to adapt to climate change impacts on the quantity, composition, and distribution of fisheries resources... Changes in migratory fish routes and fish distribution would affect travel time, which can lead to increases or decreases in fuel and ice cost[, ] depending on catch levels and patterns, and the management regime in place.

Winterkill is the most common type of fish kill. When severe, it has devastating effects on fish populations and fishing quality. Winterkill occurs during especially long, harsh winters... Winterkill begins with distressed fish gasping for air at holes in the ice and ends with large numbers of dead fish which bloat as the water warms in early spring.... During periods of prolonged ice cover, the lake is sealed off from the atmosphere and cannot be recharged with oxygenated air. Furthermore, ice and snow reduce the amount of sunlight reaching aquatic plants, thereby reducing photosynthesis and oxygen production.

... a device for setting a fishing net under the ice between two ice holes...

CONT

A jigger consists of a board and two levers so arranged that a backward pull on a line attached to one lever is translated into a forward thrust which propels the board along beneath the ice.

CONT

Another method uses a prairie ice jigger, a sledlike wooden device that slides along the underside of the ice. The jigger is launched under the ice, towing a rope. When the rope is pulled, a lever is raised; when the rope is released, the lever springs back in such a way that it pushes against the ice and jerks the jigger forward.
