The oceans are mostly composed of warm salty water near the surface over cold, less salty water in the ocean depths. These two regions don’t mix except in certain special areas. The ocean currents, the movement of the ocean in the surface layer, are driven mostly by the wind. In certain areas near the polar oceans, the colder surface water also gets saltier due to evaporation or sea ice formation. In these regions, the surface water becomes dense enough to sink to the ocean depths. This pumping of surface water into the deep ocean forces the deep water to move horizontally until it can find an area on the world where it can rise back to the surface and close the current loop. This usually occurs in the equatorial ocean, mostly in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This very large, slow current is called the thermohaline circulation because it is caused by temperature and salinity(haline) variations. 2, record 5, English, - deep%20water

The method used for qualitative detection of drugs was based on thin layer chromatography technique. In this technique compounds are separated from one another due to their relative affinities for a polar solid stationary phase (hydrated silicate) and mobile non-polar liquid phase (ethyl acetate and dichloromethane). Depending on their affinities, different compounds adsorb to the hydrated silicate at different positions as the non-polar solvent migrates up the stationary hydrated silicate. 2, record 8, English, - hydrated%20silicate

The bulk density of Europa, as derived from Voyager data, indicated a bulk composition similar to the Moon or Mars but with the addition of 5 to 10% water. The accepted view was that this water is distributed as a layer of ice ~150 km thick at the surface. Debate has continued as to whether this layer is partly liquid. Ransford was the first to suggest that this model may be too simplistic and proposed that there may also be a hydrated silicate layer. 4, record 8, English, - hydrated%20silicate

Non-selective scattering is produced by water droplets, ice fragments or large dust particles which are larger than the radiation wavelength. Such particles directly reflect any incident radiation. Let me summarize by saying the entire plan involves a fluorinated polymer base with... a piezo-electric layer of coating [under] your skis. In other words, a tiny battery is used to apply an electric field that changes the coefficient of friction with regard to ice and water, meaning... it makes your skis more slippery. A miniature computer chip senses the temperature and humidity in the snow as you ski, and continually adjusts the electric field to give you the best glide possible. 2, record 23, English, - chlorinated%20lubrication
Record number: 23, Textual support number: 2 OBS
NOTwax, unlike other fluorocarbons, is totally inert and won’t stick to anything. So how does it stay on ski and snowboard bases? Extruded and sintered bases are essentially solid. They have no porosity except at a molecular level, but will absorb small amounts of certain liquids (such as solvents). Sintered bases are more amorphous (less crystalline) and have more ability to absorb than extruded bases. Ordinary waxes and base preparations rely on surface bonding and can’t soak in more than a few microns. But NOTwax has such low viscosity and low surface tension that it will penetrate deeply into sintered bases. It stays there by capillary attraction (like water in a sponge) until the base contacts snow (or another solid surface). The wicking action of snow against the base is stronger than the capillary attraction of the base to lubricate the surface. The result is that you feel like you are riding on ball bearings. 3, record 23, English, - chlorinated%20lubrication
