Criteria for Brain Death. The criteria for the determination of brain death were developed such that any physician in any milieu could confidently diagnose it. All criteria must be met before a diagnosis of brain death can be made : The patient must be unconscious. The patient must be unable to breathe spontaneously and would therefore be on a ventilator. There must be no response to external stimuli(verbal, pain). There must be no response(eye movement) to passive head movements or to ice water syringed into the ears. There must be no blinking in response to touching the cornea. There must be no pupil response to a bright light shone into the eyes. The patient must be unable to maintain blood pressure, control fluids and electrolytes or body temperature.

Soft rime formations have the appearance of white ice needles and scales; they are fragile and can be easily shaken off objects. Hoarfrost [is] a deposit of interlocking ice crystals formed by direct sublimation on objects, usually those of small diameter freely exposed to the air, such as tree branches, plant stems and leaf edges, wires, and poles. Also, frost may form on the skin of an aircraft when a cold aircraft flies into warm and moist air or when it passes through air that is supersaturated with water vapor. Hoarfrost is formed similarly to the way dew is formed except that the temperature of the frosted object must be below freezing. Frost forms when air with a dew point below freezing is brought to saturation by cooling. In addition to its formation on freely exposed objects(air hoar), hoarfrost also forms inside unheated buildings and vehicles, in caves, in crevasses(crevasse hoar), on snow surfaces(surface hoar), and in air spaces within snow, especially below a snow crust(depth hoar). Hoarfrost is more fluffy and feathery than rime, which in turn is lighter than glaze. Hoarfrost is designated light or heavy(frost) depending upon the amount and uniformity of deposition.

According to this act, ice cream can be modified to be called reduced-fat ice cream, light ice cream, low-fat ice cream and no-fat ice cream. In order to understand these modified terms, it is necessary to realize that NLEA was promulgated to aid food processors to make foods that would result in lowering the fat intake of the U. S. population and still allow manufacturers to use food names that consumers like. Reduced-fat ice cream should achieve a 25 percent reduction in fat over the full-fat counterpart. This means ice cream with 7. 5 percent fat can be labeled as reduced-fat.

The above photo shows a halo phenomenon known as the upper tangent arc. When cirrus clouds contain columnar ice crystals aligned so that their axes are all in a horizontal direction, this type of arc may be produced. A characteristic of this arc-shaped patch of light is that it's directly above the Sun(it bends upward away from the Sun), and it's approximately 22 degrees away from the Sun itself-about 2 fists held at arms length.

The 22° halo is most common, but other halo forms are sometimes seen. The tangent arcs to the 22° halo can appear if the sun’s declination is less than 32°. One is called the lower tangent arc to the 22° halo, and the other is the upper tangent arc to the 22° halo. The shape of these tangent haloes depends upon the sun’s declination. If the sun is close to the horizon, the two upper arcs angle sharply away from the 22° halo. As the sun rises higher in the sky, the tangent arcs move toward the 22° halo. When the sun’s declination reaches 32°above the horizon, the lower and upper tangent arcs make contact, and the resulting ring is called the circumscribed halo. It touches the 22° halo above and beneath the sun. When the sun is just above 32°the circumscribed halo resembles a double oval. As the sun rises higher it becomes increasingly circular and draws nearer to the 22° halo. When the sun’s declination exceeds 70°, the circumscribed arc nearly coincides with the 22° halo.

Moon Light Effects... Moon dogs are the paler version of sun dogs : bursts of light-often in reds and blues-that appear on both sides of the moon. Both phenomena are the work of almost invisible clouds that reside in the atmosphere where commercial airliners cruise, at about 30, 000 feet. The clouds are composed largely of ice crystals, known as diamond dust. The official name for a moon dog is a paraselene if seen at 22 degrees. If the image is at 90, 120 or 140 degrees then it's known as a parantiselene.

A halo occurs when the light from the sun or the moon is refracted and reflected by ice crystals in the atmosphere... Under certain circumstances a second, or outer, halo appears, which is fainter than the inner one. At times white or colored luminous arcs are also seen lying somewhat parallel to the horizon and passing through the source of light, called mock suns, parhelia, or sun dogs for the sun, and paraselenae for the moon. Circular halo, with radius of 46°, much less common and always less bright than the small halo. It comprises a faintly luminous ring centred on the Sun or Moon.

OBS

Haloes are caused by reflection and refraction of light frm the sun or moon by ice crystals in the atmosphere. They may take the form of rings, arcs, pillars or bright spots. The type of halo formed can give information about the type of ice crystals present. Haloes may also be seen in midlatitudes and are normally formed by high, thin clouds.
