ICE LOAD [9 records]

Record 1 2013-11-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oceanography
  • Hydrology and Hydrography
CONT

When the loading of the lithosphere is changed by alterations in land ice mass, ocean mass, sedimentation, erosion, or mountain building, vertical isostatic adjustment results, in order to balance the new load.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Océanographie
  • Hydrologie et hydrographie
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Motor Vehicles and Bicycles
  • Freezing and Refrigerating
  • Food Industries
  • Transport of Goods
CONT

Both types of refrigerated vehicle are employed for long hauls. Ice, solid carbon dioxide and eutectic mixtures add enormous weight to the load to be transported, reducing the space for merchandise. The same is true of the liquid nitrogen refrigeration system of the cylinders containing liquid nitrogen will be too high. Only mechanically refrigerated vehicles should be considered at present for long-distance transport.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
CONT

... a self-equalizing anchor... is rigged on two tubular ice screws. Bowline on bight is tied into climbing rope close to belayer, and one of the two loops is enlarged by reducing the other. Small loop is clipped to big one between anchors. This is best way to tie two or more anchors together, as it distributes the load equally between them, regardless of direction of final pull.

OBS

Static uplift may be permitted where it is safe to rely upon tension without undue movement. Intermittent static uplift may occur from such conditions as certain positions of movable cranes, ice load on wires, or breakage of wires.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Fondations profondes
OBS

Le soulèvement statique peut être admis quand on est certain d'avoir une traction, sans mouvement excessif. Le soulèvement statique intermittent peut provenir de certaines positions de grues roulantes, du poids de glace sur des fils, de rupture de câbles, etc.

(...) a grinding process controlled by movement of the base of the glacier against the rock surface. Because glacial ice is of considerably lower density and hardness it seems certain that it is the rock particles held in the base of the ice that are the operative tools, and extensive abrasion must be associated with the existence of a large load of coarse basal material.
