Cette forme de terrain est due aux eaux de fonte d'un glacier, qui accumulent des sédiments entre la glace et le versant d'une vallée. D'un côté, les sédiments s'appuient donc sur un rebord rocheux et, de l'autre, reposent contre la glace. Quand cette dernière fond, l'ensemble du dépôt se borde peu à peu d'un talus plus ou moins raide situé du côté occupé auparavant par la glace. Une telle construction, comprenant une surface relativement plane terminée par un talus en pente forte, se nomme une terrasse.
