Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

A bulletin issued by [local forecast] offices to alert the public to expected formation of thin ice on plants, trees, etc., when temperatures are expected to drop to between 30°F and 40°F. Since air temperature sensors are located 5 feet above ground level, frost will often occur when air temperature sensors indicate about 36°F. A bulletin may be issued indicating "Scattered Frost" or "Frost in low lying areas".

OBS

Frost describes the formation of thin ice crystals on the ground or other surfaces in the form of scales, needles, feathers, or fans. Frost develops under conditions similar to dew, except the temperatures of the Earth's surface and earthbound objects falls below 32°F. As with the term "freeze, "this condition is primarily significant during the growing season. If a frost period is sufficiently severe to end the growing season or delay its beginning, it is commonly referred to as a "killing frost. "Because frost is primarily an event that occurs as the result of radiational cooling, it can occur with standard observing level temperature(at 5 feet above ground) in the mid to upper 30's.

OBS

In consulted sources, "frost warning" and "frost advisory" are defined in the same manner. However, Environment Canada differentiates a "warning" from an "advisory": "A weather advisory is issued when forecast conditions are expected to cause general inconvenience or concern, and do not pose a serious enough threat to issue a weather warning. An advisory will often precede a warning."

DEF

CONT

The advanced microwave scanning radiometer-EOS(AMSR-E) is one of six sensors aboard Aqua. AMSR-E is a passive microwave radiometer, modified from the advanced Earth observing satellite-II(ADEOS-II) AMSR, designed and provided by JAXA(Japan Space Agency). It observes atmospheric, land, oceanic, and cryospheric parameters, including precipitation, sea surface temperatures, ice concentrations, snow water equivalent, surface wetness, wind speed, atmospheric cloud water, and water vapor.

The Greenland Sea Project(GSP) was aimed at observing and modelling the atmospheric, ice, oceanic and biological processes relevant to understanding the role of the Nordic Seas in the climate system. The project was developed and coordinated under the auspices of the Arctic Ocean Sciences Board(AOSB) and was co-sponsored by ICES. It was carried out by national surveys, which resulted in new data sets that cover spatial scales from event via season to several years.

Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
CONT

How do we determine past climate? Information about past climate is obtained from piecing evidence together from various sources, including :Ice cores... Fossil Pollen... Lake sediments... Ocean sediment cores... Loess... Glaciers... Speleothems... Tree ring width... Boreholes... Instrumental Measurements and written or oral records : In New Zealand, quantitative records of temperature and other meteorological records are available only for the past 150 years. Such records must be analysed carefully, to identify the influence of any non-climate factors(such as changes in observing site or method, or encroaching urban development).

CONT

Paleoclimatology is the study of past climate. ... Paleoclimate is climate that existed before humans began collecting instrumental measurements of weather (such as temperature from a thermometer, ...).

OBS

Contrary to "paleoclimate", "past climate" also refers to climate in the "near" past (e.g.: approximately 150 years old) where information was also recorded by instrumental weather measurements.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Climatologie
CONT
