ICE PARTICLE [7 records]

Record 1 2011-08-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorology
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
DEF

One of the many particles of water, either a cloud drop of liquid water or an ice crystal which form a cloud.

CONT

In order for a cloud particle(water droplet or ice particle) to fall as precipitation it must grow to a minimum size. One of the growth mechanisms of water droplets is by the condensation of water vapor onto the surface of the droplet. Ice particles can grow in a similar fashion by the condensation and subsequent freezing of water vapor(riming), or the direct deposition of water vapor onto the particle.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Curling
DEF

Anything on the ice, even the smallest object, that could hinder the intended gliding of the rock.

OBS

It can also be a particle of ice or a loose pebble that hinders the rock from its intended path.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Curling
DEF

Record 3 2005-02-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Growth of a cloud or precipitation particle by the collision and union of a frozen particle(ice crystal or snowflake) with a supercooled liquid droplet which freezes on impact.

OBS

The term "coagulation", in cloud physics, is usually used to mean "accretion".

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 4 2002-11-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorology
CONT

Precipitation processes are complex. ... Snow crystals begin as minute ice particles which have formed around condensation nuclei in the atmosphere. These nuclei may be dust particles with favorable molecular structure or even minute crystals of sea salt. If these ice particles exist in an atmosphere with an excess supply of water vapor (supersaturated air) they will continue to grow. Upon reaching a critical size, they begin to fall. Depending on the conditions they encounter in different layers of air during their descent, they may continue to grow, may stop growing, or may experience a succession of growth patterns. What arrives at the ground can be a simple product of the initial ice crystal formation, or it may be the result of a complex life history.

Key term(s)
  • ice germ
  • particle of ice
  • germ of ice

French

Domaine(s)
  • Météorologie
CONT
