Three main hypotheses have been proposed to explain the genesis of p-forms and include; formation under debris rich basal ice ..., formation by subglacial meltwater erosion ..., and through abrasion by saturated till ... Given uncertainties regarding the origin of p-forms, several authors have suggested that the term p-form too strongly infers an origin by plastically deforming ice or till, and have introduced the term sculpted form or s-form ... in its place. However, the term s-form has itself come to infer a meltwater origin for these features ... 4, record 3, English, - p%2Dform

Criteria for Brain Death. The criteria for the determination of brain death were developed such that any physician in any milieu could confidently diagnose it. All criteria must be met before a diagnosis of brain death can be made : The patient must be unconscious. The patient must be unable to breathe spontaneously and would therefore be on a ventilator. There must be no response to external stimuli(verbal, pain). There must be no response(eye movement) to passive head movements or to ice water syringed into the ears. There must be no blinking in response to touching the cornea. There must be no pupil response to a bright light shone into the eyes. The patient must be unable to maintain blood pressure, control fluids and electrolytes or body temperature. 4, record 4, English, - criteria%20for%20brain%20death

2, record 4, French, - crit%C3%A8res%20de%20la%20mort%20c%C3%A9r%C3%A9brale

... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds. ... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre ... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 5, English, - sting%20jet
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Sting jets occur in cyclones when there is a dramatic fall in the barometric pressure.... The sting jet is born at an altitude of three miles, within layers of ascending moist air. As the jet descends, it passes through ice crystals that cool it, increase its density and cause it to accelerate to more than 100 mph at ground level. 5, record 5, English, - sting%20jet

The melting point of a substance should be considered a property of its crystalline form only. At the melting point the liquid and solid forms of a substance exist in equilibrium. All substances of crystalline nature have their characteristic melting points. For very pure substances the temperature range over which the process of fusion occurs is very small. The melting point of a pure crystalline solid is a function of pressure; it increases with increasing pressure for most substances. However, in the case of ice(and a few other substances) the melting point decreases with increasing pressure... Under a pressure of one standard atmosphere, the melting point of pure ice is the same as the ice point, that is, 0°C. 7, record 23, English, - melting%20point

Record number: 24, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Usage has provided two closely related but importantly different conceptions of the term saturation(a) One is the condition in which the vapor pressure exerted by water vapor is equal to the saturation vapor pressure at the prevailing temperature. This definition implies the presence of a plane surface of pure liquid water or ice, and thus is a condition dependent upon the temperature only, irrespective of actual environment. Since, in nature, such a "plane surface of pure water" is rarely found and the physico-chemical environment of water vapor is anything but constant, this strict concept of saturation can be very misleading with regard to actual condensation processes; but the conservative base which this definition supplies is required as a comparison standard(as for relative humidity measurements). More specific terminology is often advisedly used, like "saturation with respect to water" or "saturation with respect to ice".(b) The other is the condition in which the vapor pressure of water vapor is equal to the equilibrium vapor pressure under the existing environmental conditions(temperature; and shape, size and composition of adjacent matter)... It should be clear that saturation should always be defined "with respect to" an intended environment, either standard(as in a above) or actual. 3, record 24, English, - saturation

The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth's limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65. 5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km(55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor. 2, record 35, English, - microwave%20limb%20sounder

The Bergeron-Findeisen process describes how ice crystals grow at the expense of supercooled water droplets in a water-saturated environment. This process is of particular importance in mid- to high latitudes where clouds routinely extend upward to subfreezing temperatures. Determining the ratio of supercooled droplets to ice crystals and the rate at which a cloud becomes glaciated aids a forecaster’s ability to predict winter precipitation types and amounts. Making these determinations is based on an understanding of the Bergeron-Findeisen process. 2, record 52, English, - Findeisen%2DBergeron%20nucleation%20process

Saturation is the condition in which the vapor pressure exerted by water vapor is equal to the saturation vapor pressure at the prevailing temperature. More specific terminology is often advisedly used, like "saturation with respect to water" or "saturation with respect to ice". 1, record 54, English, - saturation%20with%20respect%20to%20ice

This theory is based on the fact that the saturation vapour pressure with respect to ice is lower than that with respect to supercooled liquid water at the same temperature. If both types of particles are present and the total water content is high enough, the ice crystals would grow by sublimation at the expense of the liquid drops which would lose mass by evaporation.
Record number: 64, Textual support number: 1 OBS
1, record 64, Spanish, - teor%C3%ADa%20de%20Bergeron%2DFindeisen
