Traditionally, when dealing with patients, medical practitioners bill only for face-to-face consultations. Nowadays, a significant portion of a doctor's billable time is spent in consulting with patients over the telephone and speaking to other doctors about patients. Both due to traditional and administrative hurdles, such time is rarely, if ever, billed out. As a result, private medical practitioners can only afford to spend a limited amount of unremunerated time consulting by telephone. Whilst a face-to-face consultation is usually necessary to make a full clinical diagnosis, in many cases, it is possible to provide a certain level of advice remotely(especially for subsequent consultations). 1, record 1, English, - face%2Dto%2Dface%20consultation

Invisiblization. This is a process that has much in common with marginalization, but refers specifically to how groups are represented in language and imagery. The basic idea is that powerful, dominant groups are constantly presented to us-for example through the media-and are strongly associated with positions of power, status, prestige and influence, while other groups are rarely, if ever, seen in this light-it is as if they have been rendered invisible. 1, record 2, English, - invisiblization

Generally, staff know more than auditors about what is really going on. Yet most corporate whistleblowers are given little or no protection if they choose to challenge dishonest management. The word, heirs, is necessary in the grant or donation in order to make a fee, or inheritance. For if land be given to a man for ever, or to him and his assigns for ever, this vests in him but an estate for life.... [This rule] does not extend to devises by will; in which, as they were introduced at the time when the feodal rigor was apace wearing out, a more liberal construction is allowed : and therefore by a devise to a man for ever, or to one and his assigns for ever, or to one in fee-simple, the devisee hath an estate of inheritance; for the intention of the devisor is sufficiently plain from the words of perpetuity annexed, though be hath omitted the legal words of inheritance. But if the devise be to a man and his assigns, without annexing words of perpetuity, there the devisee shall take only an estate for life; for it does not appear the devisor intended any more....(Blackstone, Book II, p. 107-108) 1, record 17, English, - words%20of%20perpetuity

No virus has ever been causally associated with CJD [Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease]. If such a virus exists its properties are very unusual. It must be ubiquitous but normally non pathogenic. PrP [prion protein] would be essential for its infectivity e. g. perhaps serving as a receptor. Prion strains exist(more than 20 strains have been identified in mice infected with scrapie prions and several strains from humans). These strains breed true in inbred mice and differ in their incubation times and lesion profiles. This observation and the reluctance to accept because of precedence the existence of a replicating agent lacking a nucleic acid genome has led to the virino hypothesis. It proposes that a small nucleic acid in association eith PrP is the infectious agent. It is not fully consistent with all of the data and no such nucleic acid sequence has ever been detected. 1, record 22, English, - virino

Rain fell as high as 1700 m in some areas, soaking the upper snowpack. Expect a raincrust to form below this elevation as temperatures begin to cool the next few days, and then expect this to be covered with additional new snow. There are a few weak layers in this storm snow and, while warm temperatures are helping heal these weaknesses, whumpfing and cracking was still reported in the Kootenay Pass area on a north facing slope at 2100 m. For the most part new snow is sticking well to the Christmas crust buried 50-70 cm deep. This crust is providing a good bridging layer for the weak facet and surface hoar crystals below the crust, but this layer still remains a concern. 1, record 27, English, - bridging%20layer

In avalanche forecasting, a bridging layer [=une couche dure] is a layer of strong(hard) snow that is often quick thick. Once a layer gets to a certain thickness and hardness, it has enough strength to absorb the load that is applied from above, thus preventing this load from triggering a weakness underneath this "bridge. "If ever the "bridge" fails then the result is normally a very large avalanche. 2, record 27, English, - bridging%20layer

The program focuses on the most basic and vital survival principles and although specifically designed for children between the ages of 7 and 11, it can be effective with slightly younger and older children as well. Hug-A-Tree and Survive" is a children's Search and Rescue(SAR) prevention program aimed at children from kindergarden to Grade 6. The main purpose of this program is to teach them; how not to become lost in the woods; what to do if they do become lost; how not to come to harm; how they can help searchers find them. 2, record 28, English, - Hug%2DA%2DTree%20and%20Survive

This is the case of couples simultaneously suffering, for example, irregular ovulation, sperm in which the concentration of mobile spermatozoa is low, or couples combining Fallopian tubes damages(but not occluded) by a previous genital infection, and poor cervical mucus quality, etc. In such cases we can speak of subfertility. These situations are more frequent than sterility which explains why pregnancies may occur spontaneously, possibly after many years of waiting. These hypofertile couples may also remain childless for ever if the time needed to achieve pregnancy proves longer than the time they have available(especially as a result of diminished fertility in women beyond a certain age). 4, record 39, English, - subfertile

Displays and Control Module(DCM)... Along the top are switches for power, communications mode selection, caution and warning. There is also a switch that controls the water that is fed to the Liquid Cooling-and-Ventilation Garment. A digital display is used to monitor the various suit circuits. At the top left of this module is an emergency relief valve. If the primary life support system were to ever malfunction, the astronaut would still have access to the secondary oxygen pack. To activate this secondary oxygen pack, all the astronaut would have to do is open a purge valve by squeezing a set of pinchers. This valve releases air pressure on the chest plate-this is the same valve that is used at the end of EVA [Extravehicular Activity] to depressurize the suit. Also on the left, a step down from the purge valve, is the mechanical-suit pressure gauge. Along the right-hand side of the module, are two switches : the ventilation-fan switch and the push-to-talk switch. The ventilation-fan switch can activate and deactivate a fan which circulates air through the helmet and other parts of the suit. The push-to-talk switch is similar to one you would find on a CB [Citizen Band] radio. If the astronaut wants to talk, he has to push the button to be heard, and if he wants to receive voice messages, he has to release the button. On the front of the panel are other controls for volume, temperature, and suit pressure. 2, record 41, English, - display%20and%20control%20module

Pour l'activer, l'astronaute n'aurait qu'à ouvrir une valve de purge en pinçant une série de boutons. By giving a cognitive enhancer, with minimal side effects, to people without a mental deficit, they may end up with cognitive credit, i. e. smarter. Some elements within the scientific establishment continue to deny the potential of cognitive enhancers. They believe that the optimal brain cannot be improved upon by throwing in, a "chemical spanner". But optimal memory can be improved, for example, by employing "mnemonics", which is as "artificial" as a chemical lift from a pill. Would they also resist cognitive enhancement by other artificial methods such as food-a "chemical spanner" if ever there was one-and education? The United States Congress has declared the 1990s the "Decade of the Brain". Smart drugs will, if regulated, treat a recently officially recognized disease, the Age-Associated Memory Impairment(AAMI)-a noticeable mental decline due to the normal ageing process. A futures analyst, Decision Resources, predicts that smart drugs could benefit 600 million people this decade, including 60 million people with AAMI, 20 million students who want to improve scholastic performance, and 270 million people hoping to improve their efficiency at work(Suppl. The World in 1994). 1, record 51, English, - cognitive%20enhancement

One source of computational waste in backward planning is work on clauses that describe unachievable states. For example, it is not possible to crate a state in which block A is on block B and block B is clear. Thus, if we ever produce the following clause during backward planning using resolution refutation, we can prune it from further consideration because it is valid(i. e., its negation is inconsistent). One way to detect such cases is to set up a resolution subprocess to test clauses for validity. If this test reveals that a clause is valid, that clause is pruned from further consideration. This deletion strategy is sometimes called unachievability pruning. We test for validity by testing the negated clause for consistency. 1, record 55, English, - unachievability%20pruning
