The first really major breakthrough from an optical-communications viewpoint was made by scientists at Corning Glass Works when they developed fibers based on high silicas.... They achieved these low-loss fibers by a flame-hydrolysis method in which silicon tetrachloride with, if desired, a suitable dopant halide, would react with oxygen to form a white silica soot deposited on a silica mandrel. Rotating the mandrel and translating the flame back and forth causes a buildup of the white soot deposit. By varying the dopant concentration during this buildup, the Corning scientists were also able to achieve a gradient in the composition. Subsequently, the soot is consolidated into a clear glass by an appropriate heat treatment, after which the mandrel is removed. The 12-hour clock is a time conversion convention in which the 24 hours of the day are divided into two periods called “ante meridiem”(“a. m., ” English :"before mid day") and “post meridiem”(“p. m., ” English :"after mid day"). Alternatively, the twenty-four-hour-clock system may be used. … In the United States, noon is often called "12 : 00 p. m. "and midnight "12 : 00 a. m. "With this convention, thinking of "12" as "0" makes the system logical. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language(Fourth Edition, 2000) has a similar usage note on this topic :"Strictly speaking, 12 a. m. denotes midnight, and 12 p. m. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required. "Many U. S. style guides(including the NIST website) recommend that it is clearest if one refers to "noon" or "12 : 00 noon" and "midnight" or "12 : 00 midnight"(rather than to "12 : 00 p. m. "and "12 : 00 a. m. Interlacing, invented in the 1940s, is probably the earliest form of video compression. Instead of transmitting a complete video frame 60 times every second, engineers discovered that they could halve the bandwidth needed by the TV signal if they sent alternately odd and even "fields", each field comprising just the odd or even picture lines.... When viewed on a progressive display device, such as a PC, two fields are interlaced to create one frame. Because half the frame's lines are captured a fraction of a second later than the other half, fast-moving objects may appear jagged, the result of the object advancing slightly within 1/60th of a second... An airport located 55 km from downtown Montréal, officially inaugurated in 1975, and intended to become Montréal' s main airport. Initially named "Mirabel International Airport, "it was later designated "Montréal Airport in Mirabel"(Montréal-Mirabel) when chosen for international flights while the "Montréal Airport in Dorval"(Montréal-Dorval) was limited to domestic flights, that is flights inside Canada.
