The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme(IGBP) is an interdisciplinary scientific activity established and sponsored by the International Council for Science(ICSU). The Programme was instituted by ICSU in 1986, and the IGBP Secretariat was established at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1987.... The programme is focused on acquiring basic scientific knowledge about the interactive processes of biology and chemistry of the Earth as they relate to Global Change. A Special Committee for the IGBP was created at the 21st General Assembly of ICSU in 1986 to plan for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme : A Study of Global Change(IGBP). The IGBP is a research programme with the objective to describe and understand the interactive physical, chemical and biological processes that regulate the total Earth system, the unique environment that it provides for life, the changes that are occurring in this system, and the manner in which they are influenced by human actions. A Scientific Committee was appointed in September 1990(as the successor to the Special Committee) to guide the implementation of the IGBP research. The Scientific Advisory Council(SAC) of the IGBP makes recommendations for the general policy of the Committee. The goal of GAIM is to advance the study of the coupled dynamics of the Earth system using as tools both data and models. Le GAIM est un projet principal du PIGB dont l'objectif est de favoriser le développement de modèles détaillés de prévision du système biogéochimique global et de coupler ces modèles avec ceux du système climatique physique. PAGES is the IGBP(International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme) Core Project charged with providing a quantitative understanding of the Earth's past environment and defining the envelope of natural climate variability within which we can assess anthropogenic impact on the Earth's biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere.
