Record 1 2016-05-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ignition Systems (Motor Vehicles)
DEF

An ignition system for gas engines, in which ignition takes place by the flame made in the small sub-combustion chamber(pre-chamber) provided on the cylinder head.

OBS

micro-pilot ignition system: term and definition standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Allumage (Véhicules automobiles)
DEF

Système d'allumage pour moteurs à gaz dont l'allumage est déclenché par la flamme initiée dans la petite chambre de sous-combustion (préchambre) aménagée sur la culasse.

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
  • Helicopters (Military)
CONT

The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft.... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs(explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line.

OBS

This system is specific to the McDonnell Douglas Corporation aircraft (DC-9, DC-10).

OBS

fire control handle : term officially approved by the Aeronautical Terminology Standardization Committee (ATSC) - Helicopters.

Record 5 2000-04-28

English

Subject field(s)
  • Combustion and Fuels (Fireplaces)
  • Burners and Steamfitting
DEF

The phenomenon which causes a flame to conduct more current in one direction than in the other. It is due to the ionization of air in and around the flame, and to the difference in area of the electrodes in the flame envelope. (The ground area is at least 4 times the area of the flame rod).

CONT

The Pactrol CSA provides automatic ignition control and flame supervision for gas burners... The control provides a short pre-purge period followed by an ignition period, and there is a choice of alternative timings. Flame supervision is by flame rectification, with the option of ultra-violet sensing with the addition of a special UV head. The control will shut-down and provide volatile lock-out following flame-failure or an unsuccessful ignition attempt, and may be reset by interrupting the electrical supply.

CONT

Each chiller-heater is equipped with a forced draft, post mixing type gas burner with electric ignition and flame rectification monitoring for efficiency and safety.
