In earlier engines, distribution was controlled by mechanical means, nowadays it is controlled by the ECU. Data is gathered from the engine's phase sensor and used to determine when each cylinder should be ignited. This is done by using spark plugs : an electric pulse is sent to the ignition coil that amplifies the signal and sends a high voltage pulse to the spark plug.

A device which provides high-voltage spark which will cause ignition.

CONT

The ignition transformer, commonly known as a step-up transformer, is used to step up the voltage to 5, 000 V in order to jump the gap at the end of the ignition electrode. Ignition transformers are quite trouble-free, and require only that the primary voltage correspond to that of the transformer, that the electrical connections be clean and tight, and that the secondary terminals be kept clean. If the secondary terminal post becomes fouled with soot, dust, or foreign matter, the high-tension spark can easily short circuit to the transformer case, resulting in no spark at the ignition electrode. A transformer in good condition should cause the spark to jump a gap of no less than 1/4 in.

The high pressure atomizing type gun... burner supplies oil to the atomizing nozzle at 689 to 2067 kPa. A blower is used to supply the air for combustion, and a damper or other adjustable means regulates the air supply at the burner. Ignition is usually established by a high voltage electric spark which may be intermittent, sometimes called constant ignition(on when the burner motor is on) or interrupted(on only to start combustion). Typically these burners fire into a combustion chamber in which negative draft is maintained.
