The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 2, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

On January 1, 2002, the municipalities which were grouped, since January 1, 1970, under the Communauté urbaine de Montréal(CUM), sometimes called "the Greater Montréal, "became one city. The expression "Greater Montréal" was understood as grouping all the municipalities of the Île de Montréal, or Montréal Island, now forming the new city of Montréal, but as excluding those on Jésus Island, Bizard Island and the South Shore. To include all of these, the expression "Metropolitan Montréal" or "Greater Montréal area" was used. Nevertheless, as usages may differ, it was always necessary to refer to the context to understand what was meant. 5, record 18, English, - Communaut%C3%A9%20urbaine%20de%20Montr%C3%A9al

In Canada, the name of an inhabited place has the same form in English and in French. The name of the city always takes an accent when used alone or as part of a designation, "Montréal" being the only form registered on the Incorporation Act. Thus, "Montréal Urban Community (MUC)" should have been the initial spelling of the administrative body. 5, record 18, English, - Communaut%C3%A9%20urbaine%20de%20Montr%C3%A9al

Founded by harpsichordist Mathieu Duguay, it has attracted thousands of music lovers to the picturesque island, delighting them with early music performed in the exceptional acoustics of the colourful Sainte-Cécile church in Petite-Rivière-de-l'Île. It is unique in Canada for its dedication to music from the period 1600-1760, presenting outstanding performances on period instruments(or replicas.) Usages do not agree on the meaning of these adjectives sometimes considered synonyms. Usually, "Greater" means a large city with its surrounding suburbs while "Metropolitan" includes also the inhabited region surrounding the former. Thus, the expression "Greater Montréal" was understood as grouping all the municipalities of the Île de Montréal, or Montréal Island, now forming the new city of Montréal, but as excluding those on Jésus Island, Bizard Island and the South Shore. To include all of these, the expression "Metropolitan Montréal" or "Greater Montréal area" was used. Nevertheless, as usages may differ, it is always necessary to refer to the context to understand what is meant. 3, record 37, English, - Greater

2, record 37, French, - Grand
Record number: 37, Textual support number: 2 OBS

An airport located in Dorval, now a part of the city of Montréal, and used for private, local, national and international flights. The airport was first the "Dorval Airport, "from the name of the city in the suburbs of Montréal, then the "Dorval International Airport, "to become the airport for domestic flights, that is the flights limited to Canada, with the construction of the "Mirabel International Airport" inaugurated in 1975 and intended for international flights. But inadequate terrestrial links between Montréal and Mirabel contributed to give to the Montréal Dorval Airport("Montréal-Dorval") its international status, leaving the charter(up to Autumn 2004) and cargo flights to the Mirabel Airport("Montréal-Mirabel") ;political decisions for these ends were accompanied by important subsidies for the building of added accommodations to what has become the "Montréal Dorval International Airport. "With the amalgamation or merging of all the cities on the Île de Montréal, including the former cities of Montréal and of Dorval, to form the new city of Montréal on the 1 January 2002, the airport became the "Montréal Airport, "a reality usage had already confirmed. On the 1 January 2004, the airport's name changed to "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" to honour a former Prime Minister of Canada as do other important airports in the country. The official name will, no doubt, not be quoted at length all the time; the forms mentioned as correct on the present record will surely be used instead, including the recommendation of the airport authority as to the use of "Montréal-Trudeau" as the current short form("fly from Montréal-Trudeau", or "land at the Montréal-Trudeau Airport"). Even if the airport encountered many name and status changes, it never had a name that includes a comma, and had always been represented by YUL, its IATA three-letter code. 3, record 38, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport

The Montréal Dorval International Airport has been officially renamed "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport," written "Montréal - Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" (a dash with a space before and after) in some governmental documents, during a ceremony held on September 9, 2003. The new name is effective starting January 1, 2004. Pierre Elliott Trudeau, of the Liberal Party, has been Prime Minister of Canada from April 20, 1968 to June 3, 1979, and from March 3, 1980 to June 29, 1984; he died in Montréal on September 28, 2000. 3, record 38, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport

In the legend, it is mentioned that the administrator, Aéroports de Montréal, recommends the use of "Montréal-Trudeau" as a current short form and that the code identifying the airport will remain YUL, the code of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) being international and the same in all languages. 3, record 38, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport

In Canada (with seven exceptions as of December 31, 2004, and "Montréal" is not among them), the name of an inhabited place has the same form in English and French, which form is listed in the Gazetteer of the province or territory in accordance with the inscription in the Incorporation Act of the entity. 3, record 38, English, - Montr%C3%A9al%20Pierre%20Elliott%20Trudeau%20International%20Airport
