ILLINOIAN STAGE [7 records]

Record 1 2011-02-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glaciology
  • Chronology
DEF

A major subdivision of a glacial epoch, especially one of the cycles of growth and disappearance of the Pleistocene ice sheets.

CONT

The "Wisconsin Glacial Stage".

OBS

The Quaternary is subdivided on the basis of climatic change, a fact that gives rise to certain problems. For example, "glacials" and "interglacials" are recognized, and are accorded the status of "stages" by many workers, although they fail to meet the requirements of a stage as recommended in stratigraphic codes and guides. As a result, terms of long-standing currency such as "Illinoian Glacial Stage" and "Sangamonian Interglacial Stage" do not have an adequate chronostratigraphic definition.

Record 2 1999-12-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geological and Other Scientific Names
OBS

A same designation could refer to a geographic or a geologic entity, sometimes with a slight variant in spelling or writing. It is important to distinguish one from the other and write each correctly according to the given context.

OBS

The glaciation that took place during the glacial period called "Illinoian Glacial Stage".

OBS

The Quaternary includes four major glaciations each of which occupied a period of about 100,000 years. From oldest to youngest these are known as Nebraskan, Kansan, Illinoian, and Wisconsin.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Noms géologiques ou scientifiques
OBS
